1. In Taiyang disease (Disease of the Taiyang/Bladder channel), characterized by fever and absence of sweating, with an aversion to cold, it is named Gang Jing (Yang Spasm).
2. In Taiyang disease, characterized by fever and sweating, without aversion to cold, it is named Rou Jing (Yin Spasm).
3. In Taiyang disease, with fever and a deep, fine pulse, it is named Jing disease (Spasm). It is difficult to treat.
4. Excessive sweating in Taiyang disease leads to Jing disease (Spasm).
5. If a patient with Wind disease undergoes purgation, Jing disease (Spasm) results; if sweating is induced again, limb stiffness and urgency will definitely occur.
6. A patient with sores or ulcers, even if experiencing body pain, should not undergo sweating therapy; if sweating occurs, Jing disease (Spasm) will result.
7. The patient presents with body heat but cold feet, stiff and urgent neck and back, aversion to cold, occasional head heat, red face and eyes, isolated head tremor, sudden lockjaw, and opisthotonos (back arching backward). This is Jing disease (Spasm). If sweating therapy is applied, cold-dampness combines, further weakening the exterior, leading to severe aversion to cold; after sweating, the pulse becomes like a snake (winding and weak).
8. Sudden abdominal distension indicates impending resolution, with the pulse remaining normal; if the pulse is instead hidden and wiry, it is Jing disease (Spasm).
9. The pulse of Jing disease (Spasm), when pressed, is tight and string-like, running straight up and down. (Another version: pulsating and wiry. *Mai Jing* states: For patients with Jing disease (Spasm), the pulse is hidden and firm, running straight up and down.)
10. Jing disease (Spasm) combined with moxibustion sores is difficult to treat.
11. Taiyang disease with complete symptoms, stiff body, and a "Ji Ji" sensation (stiffness in the neck and back), with a reverse deep and slow pulse, is Jing disease (Spasm). It is treated with Gualou Guizhi Tang (Trichosanthes Root and Cinnamon Twig Decoction).
Gualou Guizhi Tang (Trichosanthes Root and Cinnamon Twig Decoction) Formula:
Gualou Gen (Trichosanthes Radix, 2 liang), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 3 liang), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 3 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 liang), Dazao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus, 12 pieces).
The above six ingredients are boiled in 9 sheng of water to obtain 3 sheng. Divide into three warm doses to induce slight sweating. If sweat does not appear, drink hot porridge for a while to promote sweating.
12. Taiyang disease with no sweating, reduced urine output, Qi rushing to the chest, lockjaw preventing speech, indicating impending Gang Jing (Yang Spasm). It is treated with Gegen Tang (Kudzu Root Decoction).
Gegen Tang (Kudzu Root Decoction) Formula:
Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, 4 liang), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, 3 liang, nodes removed), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 2 liang, bark removed), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 2 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang, honey-fried), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 liang), Dazao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus, 12 pieces).
The above seven ingredients are crushed, boiled in 1 dou of water. First boil Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) and Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) until reduced by 2 sheng, skim off foam, then add other herbs. Boil to obtain 3 sheng, filter, and take 1 sheng warm. Cover to induce slight sweating; drinking hot porridge is not required. Rest and dietary precautions follow the method of Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction).
13. In Jing disease (Spasm), with chest fullness, lockjaw, inability to lie flat on the back (severe opisthotonos), leg cramps, and teeth grinding, Da Chengqi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction) may be given.
Da Chengqi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction) Formula:
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 4 liang, wine-washed), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, half jin, honey-fried, bark removed), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, 5 pieces, honey-fried), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 2 he).
The above four ingredients are boiled in 1 dou of water. First boil Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) and Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) to obtain 5 sheng, filter; add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), boil to obtain 2 sheng, filter; add Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), boil briefly over fire for one or two boils, divide into two warm doses. Stop taking upon defecation.
14. Taiyang disease with joint pain and irritability, and a deep, fine (or slow) pulse, is named Shi Bi (Dampness Bi Syndrome). (*Yu Han Jing* states: Infected by Dampness). The manifestation of Shi Bi (Dampness Bi Syndrome) includes difficulty in urination and loose stools; treatment should focus on promoting urination.
15. Patients with chronic Dampness present with generalized body pain, fever, and a sallow yellow complexion resembling smoked yellow.
16. Patients with chronic Dampness who only sweat from the head, have a stiff back, and desire covering and warmth near fire, if treated too early with purgation, may experience hiccups or chest fullness. With difficulty in urination (or clear urination) and a tongue coating resembling moss, this is due to Heat in the Dantian (Lower Jiao) and Cold in the Chest (Upper Jiao). Thirst with inability to drink leads to dry mouth and irritability.
17. If patients with chronic Dampness are purged, resulting in sweating on the forehead, slight wheezing, and clear urination (or difficulty in urination), death ensues; similarly, if diarrhea persists uncontrollably, death ensues.
18. When Wind-Dampness combats, causing generalized body pain, sweating should theoretically resolve the condition. However, during continuous rainy weather, if a physician prescribes sweating therapy and the illness persists, why? Because excessive sweating expels only the Wind, leaving Dampness behind, hence no cure. To treat Wind-Dampness, sweating should be mild and continuous ("like wanting to sweat"), allowing both Wind and Dampness to be expelled.
19. Patients with chronic Dampness presenting with body pain, fever, yellow face, wheezing, headache, nasal congestion, irritability, and a large pulse, yet able to eat normally with a harmonious abdomen, have Cold-Dampness lodged in the head causing nasal congestion. Inserting medicine into the nose will cure it. (*Mai Jing* notes: Patient wheezes. Omits the thirteen characters from "Shi jia bing" to "er chuan".)
20. Patients with chronic Dampness suffering from vexatious body pain may be given Mahuang Jia Zhu Tang (Ephedra plus Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction). Sweating is appropriate; caution against using fire therapy.
Mahuang Jia Zhu Tang (Ephedra plus Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction) Formula:
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, 3 liang, nodes removed), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 2 liang, bark removed), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang, honey-fried), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 70 seeds, skin and tips removed), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 4 liang).
The above five ingredients are boiled in 9 sheng of water. First boil Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), reduce by 2 sheng, skim foam, add other herbs, boil to obtain 2.5 sheng, filter, and take 8 ge warm. Cover to induce slight sweating.
21. Patients with generalized body pain and fever that worsens at dusk (You period, 3-5 PM) have Feng Shi (Wind-Dampness). This condition arises from sweating exposed to wind or prolonged exposure to cold. It is treated with Mahuang Xingyi Gancao Tang (Ephedra, Coix Seed, and Licorice Decoction).
Mahuang Xingyi Gancao Tang (Ephedra, Coix Seed, and Licorice Decoction) Formula:
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed, half liang, soaked in hot water), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang, honey-fried), Yiyiren (Coicis Semen, half liang), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 10 seeds, skin and tips removed, stir-fried).
Crush the ingredients to the size of hemp seeds. Take 4 qian per dose with 1.5 sheng of water, boil to 0.8 sheng, filter, and take warm. Avoid wind after inducing slight sweating.
22. For Wind-Dampness with a floating pulse, heavy body, sweating, and aversion to wind, Fangji Huangqi Tang (Stephania and Astragalus Decoction) is indicated.
Fangji Huangqi Tang (Stephania and Astragalus Decoction) Formula:
Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, 1 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, half liang, stir-fried), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 7.5 qian), Huangqi (Astragali Radix, 1 liang 1 fen, rhizome removed).
Crush ingredients to the size of hemp seeds. Take 5.7 qian per dose with 4 slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and 1 piece of Dazao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus), boil in 1.5 sheng of water to 0.8 sheng, filter, and take warm. Repeat later. Add Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) half liang for wheezing, Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 3 fen for stomach disharmony, Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) 3 fen for Qi rushing upward, and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) 3 fen for old cold below. After taking, a sensation of insects crawling under the skin and ice-cold feeling below the waist is expected. Sit on a quilt and wrap another around the waist to keep warm until slight sweating occurs, then recovery.
23. After eight or nine days of Shanghan (Cold Damage), with Wind-Dampness combatting, causing painful body irritability, inability to turn independently, no vomiting, no thirst, and a floating, deficient, and choppy pulse, Guizhi Fuzi Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Prepared Aconite Decoction) is indicated. If stool is hard and urination is free, remove Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and add Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), treated with Baizhu Fuzi Tang (Atractylodes Macrocephala and Prepared Aconite Decoction).
Guizhi Fuzi Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Prepared Aconite Decoction) Formula:
Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 4 liang, bark removed), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 liang, sliced), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 3 pieces, processed, bark removed, broken into 8 pieces), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang, honey-fried), Dazao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus, 12 pieces, split).
The above five ingredients are boiled in 6 sheng of water to obtain 2 sheng, filter, and divide into three warm doses.
Baizhu Fuzi Tang (Atractylodes Macrocephala and Prepared Aconite Decoction) Formula:
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 2 liang), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 1.5 pieces, processed, bark removed), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang, honey-fried), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 1.5 liang, sliced), Dazao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus, 6 pieces).
The above five ingredients are boiled in 3 sheng of water to obtain 1 sheng, filter, and divide into three warm doses. After the first dose, numbness may be felt; repeat after half an hour. After all three doses, a dizzy sensation may occur; do not be alarmed, as this is Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) moving through the skin to expel water qi.
24. When Wind-Dampness combats, causing painful joints, pulling pain preventing flexion and extension, severe pain upon touch, sweating, shortness of breath, difficulty in urination, aversion to wind with reluctance to remove clothes, or slight edema, Gancao Fuzi Tang (Licorice and Prepared Aconite Decoction) is indicated.
Gancao Fuzi Tang (Licorice and Prepared Aconite Decoction) Formula:
Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang, honey-fried), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 1 piece, processed, bark removed), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 2 liang), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 4 liang, bark removed).
The above four ingredients are boiled in 6 sheng of water to obtain 3 sheng, filter, and take 1 sheng warm, three times daily. Initial dose induces slight sweating for relief. If eating and sweating cause renewed irritability, take 5 ge. If 1 sheng is considered too much, 6-7 ge is optimal.
25. Taiyang Zhongshu (Summerheat Stroke) presents with fever, aversion to cold, heavy body pain, and a wiry, fine, knotted, and slow pulse. After urination, there is a chill with hair standing on end, cold extremities, fever upon slight exertion, open mouth, and dry front teeth. Sweating exacerbates aversion to cold; warming needles exacerbate fever; repeated purgation exacerbates strangury.
26. Taiyang Zhongre (Summerheat Heat) is Zhongshu (Summerheat Stroke). With sweating, aversion to cold, body heat, and thirst, Baihu Jia Renshen Tang (White Tiger plus Ginseng Decoction) is indicated.
Baihu Jia Renshen Tang (White Tiger plus Ginseng Decoction) Formula:
Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 6 liang), Shigao (Gypsi Fibrosus, 1 jin, crushed), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang), Jingsmi (Oryza Sativa, 6 he), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 3 liang).
The above five ingredients are boiled in 1 dou of water until rice is cooked and soup is ready, filter, and take 1 sheng warm, three times daily.
27. Taiyang Zhongshu (Summerheat Stroke) with body heat, pain, heaviness, and a weak pulse is caused by injuring cold water in summer, with water qi circulating in the skin. Yi Wu Goudi Tang (Single Ingredient Momordica Seed Decoction) is indicated.
Yi Wu Goudi Tang (Single Ingredient Momordica Seed Decoction) Formula:
Goudi (Momordicae Fructus, 27 seeds).
Crush the ingredient, boil in 1 sheng of water to obtain 5 he, filter, and take once.
