1. The treatise states: Baihe Bing (Lily Disease) occurs when all meridians, originating from a single source (Heart and Lung), are affected by pathogenic factors. Patients desire to eat but cannot; they remain silent; they desire to lie down but cannot sleep soundly; they desire to walk but cannot move freely. Their appetite varies, sometimes finding food palatable, other times being repulsed by the smell of food. They feel as if cold but are not actually cold, feel as if hot but are not actually hot. There is bitter taste in the mouth, dark red urine, and various medications fail to cure the condition. Administration of drugs often leads to severe vomiting or diarrhea, as if possessed by spirits. The physical appearance seems normal, yet the pulse is slightly rapid. If headache occurs during urination, recovery takes sixty days; if there is no headache during urination but rather a sensation of chilliness (Xiran), recovery takes forty days; if urination is smooth with only dizziness, recovery takes twenty days. Symptoms may appear before the disease fully manifests, or emerge four to five days after onset, or become faintly visible after twenty days or a month. Treatment should be tailored to the specific syndrome.
