All flavors of food and drink are intended to nourish the body. However, if consumed improperly, they can cause harm instead. Unless one is taking medicine or practicing liquid refinement (a Daoist health preservation method involving breathing and water intake), how can one avoid eating? I often observe that people today do not understand how to regulate their diet and lifestyle, leading to a succession of diseases. If these illnesses are not caused by diet, one cannot preserve life. Therefore, it is essential to know which foods are strictly contraindicated.
The flavors of food consumed may be suitable for certain conditions or harmful to the body. If suitable, they benefit the physique; if harmful, they cause disease. Such situations leading to danger are generally difficult to treat.
Any method of boiling herbs and drinking the juice to detoxify, although claimed to be for emergency rescue, should not be taken hot. Various toxic conditions worsen with heat; thus, cold drinks should be used for administration.
In liver disease, pungent flavors are prohibited. In heart disease, salty flavors are prohibited. In spleen disease, sour flavors are prohibited. In lung disease, bitter flavors are prohibited. In kidney disease, sweet flavors are prohibited. In spring, do not eat liver; in summer, do not eat heart; in autumn, do not eat lungs; in winter, do not eat kidneys; during the last eighteen days of each season (the transition periods), do not eat spleen.
Explanation: The reason for not eating liver in spring is that liver qi is prosperous while spleen qi is weak. Eating liver would further tonify liver qi, causing spleen qi to deteriorate even more, rendering it incurable. Furthermore, when liver qi is prosperous, "death qi" should not enter the liver, as it may damage the hun (ethereal soul). If it is not the time when liver qi is prosperous, the liver is deficient, and using liver to tonify it is beneficial. The same principle applies to other zang organs.
Animal livers should never be eaten lightly. Those from animals that died naturally are particularly dangerous. The heart is the residence of the shen (spirit); it should not be eaten, as doing so may lead to karmic retribution in the next life.
Meat and liver that do not touch dust when dropped on the ground should not be eaten. Pork that floats in water should not be eaten. Pork and fish that dogs refuse to eat and birds refuse to peck at should not be eaten. Pork that is not dry, does not move when roasted over fire, and moves automatically when exposed to water should not be eaten. Meat containing spots resembling cinnabar should not be eaten. Meat from the six domestic animals (horses, cattle, sheep, chickens, dogs, pigs) with unceasing hot blood should not be eaten. Consuming meat from one's parents or one's own zodiac year animal causes spiritual unrest.
Consuming fatty meat and hot soups should not be followed by drinking cold water. Any internal organ or fish that does not get dirty with dust when thrown to the ground should not be eaten. Spoiled rice, rotting meat, and smelly fish are all harmful if consumed. Meat from animals that died naturally, especially those with closed mouths, should not be eaten. Animals that die naturally usually die from epidemics and are therefore toxic; they should not be eaten. Wild beasts that die naturally with their heads facing north and lying flat on the ground are lethal if consumed. Eating raw meat until full and then drinking milk can cause the formation of white worms (or blood worms). Beef from animals that died of epidemic diseases causes severe diarrhea and hard accumulations in the abdomen; purgative medicines should be used to evacuate them. Dried meat stored in rice jars becomes toxic, and consuming dried meat in summer can induce kidney disease.
Formula for poisoning from eating self-dead livestock:
Crush huangbai xie (Phellodendron bark fragments) and take one fangcun bi (a traditional measuring spoon) orally.
Formula for poisoning from yu rou (meat covered in sealed containers overnight) and lou pu (meat contaminated by roof leaks):
Take burned dog feces mixed with wine, one fangcun bi per dose. Human breast milk is also effective. Drinking three sheng of fresh chive juice is also acceptable.
Formula for poisoning from dried meat stored in millet:
Boil soybeans thickly to extract juice, drink several sheng to detoxify. This also treats poisoning from badger meat and lou pu.
Formula for poisoning from eating raw meat:
Dig three chi deep into the earth, collect three sheng of subsoil, boil with five sheng of water for several boils, clarify the juice, and drink one sheng to recover.
Formula for poisoning from eating liver of livestock, birds, or beasts:
Soak douchi (fermented soybeans) in water, squeeze out the juice, and drink several sheng to recover.
Horses without night eyes (small hooves behind the main hooves) should not be eaten. Eating sour horse meat (note: "sour" likely refers to "jun," meaning inferior or specific type) without drinking alcohol can be fatal. Horse meat should not be eaten hot, as it damages the heart. Meat from under the saddle is lethal. White horses with black heads should not be eaten. White horses with green hooves should not be eaten. Eating horse meat together with venison, followed by sleeping while drunk, is strictly forbidden. Combining donkey/mule meat with pork causes cholera-like disorder. Maogan (horse liver and hair) should not be eaten recklessly as they are toxic.
Formula for treating horse liver poisoning before death:
Take fourteen grains of male rat feces, powder them, mix with water, and take twice daily. (Use the tip of the feces.)
Another formula:
Collect human dirt (e.g., earwax), take one fangcun bi orally for best results.
Formula for treating severe poisoning from eating horse meat:
Xiangchi (fragrant fermented soybeans, 2 liang) and Xingren (apricot seeds, 3 liang).
Steam these two ingredients for the duration of a meal, pound when cooked, and take twice daily.
Another formula:
Decoct lugen (reed rhizome) and drink; this is effective.
Beef from cattle that died of epidemics, especially those with red or yellow eyes, is strictly forbidden. Eating beef with pork causes tapeworms. Green cattle intestines should not be eaten with dog meat. From March to May, cow lungs may contain worms resembling horse tails; cut them out and do not eat, as they harm the body. Do not smoke or roast beef, mutton, or pork with catalpa or mulberry wood, as this causes intestinal parasites. Beef from cows bitten by snakes is toxic and lethal. Such beef can be identified by its backward-slicked hair.
Formula for treating poisoning from snake-bitten beef causing near-death state:
Drink one sheng of human breast milk for immediate recovery.
Another formula:
Wash head with rice washing water and drink one sheng for recovery.
Alternatively, finely chop cow rumen, decoct in ten dou of water until reduced to one sheng, drink warm, and recover after profuse sweating.
Formula for treating beef poisoning:
Decoct gancao (licorice root) in water and drink to detoxify.
Mutton is contraindicated for those with lingering heat. Mutton should not be eaten with raw fish or dairy products, as it harms the body. The white pearl-like tendon in sheep hooves, called xuanjin, causes epilepsy if eaten. Brains of white-headed sheep cause intestinal abscesses. Eating sheep liver with pepper destroys the five zang organs. Eating pork with sheep liver causes chest oppression. Eating pork with raw coriander corrodes the navel. Pig fat should not be eaten with plums. Eating pork with kai vegetables (winter purslane) depletes qi. Deer meat should not be made into soup with rush pith, as it causes malignant sores. Elk fat and plums/prunes consumed by pregnant women cause blindness in the child and essence depletion in men. Chamois meat should not be eaten with shrimp, raw vegetables, plums, or prunes, as it harms the body.
Patients with chronic stubborn diseases should not eat bear meat, as it prevents cure. White dogs that die naturally with tongues protruding are harmful if eaten. Eating leftovers from dogs or rats causes skin sores.
Formula for indigestion of dog meat causing epigastric hardness, abdominal distension, dry mouth/thirst, fever, delirium, or diarrhea:
Xingren (apricot seeds, 1 sheng, peeled and cooked then ground).
Mix with three sheng of boiling water, strain, and divide into three doses. It effectively expels meat pieces.
Pregnant women should not eat rabbit, wild goat, turtle, chicken, or duck meat, as it causes voicelessness in the child. Rabbit meat should not be eaten with white chicken meat, as it causes yellow complexion. Rabbit meat with dried ginger causes cholera-like disorder. Birds that die naturally with open mouths and spread wings should not be eaten. Poultry with green livers are lethal if eaten. Chickens with six primary flight feathers and four spurs should not be eaten. Black chickens with white heads should not be eaten. Chicken should not be eaten with garlic, as it stagnates qi. One version says eggs are also contraindicated. Partridge should not be eaten with bird/beast meat. Long-term consumption of pheasant meat causes emaciation. Chicken eggs should not be eaten with turtle meat. Pregnant women eating sparrow meat and drinking alcohol produce children prone to licentiousness and shamelessness. Sparrow meat should not be eaten with plums. Do not eat swallow meat; legend says it attracts dragons in water.
Meat from birds or beasts killed by poisoned arrows is toxic. To detoxify:
Drink decoction of soybeans or salt water.
Fish heads with pure white color extending like beads to the spine are lethal. Fish heads without gills are lethal. Fish without intestines or gallbladders are harmful; consuming them may cause impotence in men and sterility in women. Fish heads resembling horns should not be eaten. Fish with closed eyes should not be eaten. On the Six Jia days, avoid eating scaled or shelled creatures. Fish should not be eaten with chicken. Fish should not be eaten with cormorant meat. Carp should not be eaten with adzuki beans or bean leaves. Carp roe should not be eaten with pig liver, as it harms the body. Carp should not be eaten with dog meat. Crucian carp should not be eaten with monkey or pheasant meat. One version says it should not be eaten with pig liver. Raw fish with venison causes contraction of tendons and nails. Blue fish should not be eaten with raw coriander, raw kai vegetables, or wheat products. Loach and eel should not be eaten with white dog blood. Turtle meat should not be eaten with alcohol or fruits. Turtles with sunken eyes or a "Wang" character pattern on the belly should not be eaten. Their meat should not be eaten with chicken or duck. Turtle and tortoise meat should not be eaten with amaranth. Shrimp without whiskers, with black bellies, or turning white when boiled should not be eaten. Eating sashimi (kuai) with milk/dairy causes intestinal worms and masses.
If sashimi remains undigested in the chest/heart region and cannot be vomited, it must be purged quickly to prevent mass formation. Formula:
Jupi (tangerine peel, 1 liang), Dahuang (rhubarb, 2 liang), Puxiao (mirabilite, 2 liang).
Decoct in one da sheng of water until reduced to one xiao sheng, take in one dose to dissolve.
For excessive sashimi consumption leading to indigestion and mass formation:
Mabiancao (madder vine).
Crush and drink the juice, or drink one sheng of ginger leaf juice to resolve. Vomiting agents can also be used.
For simultaneous poisoning from fish and other toxins causing confusion:
Jupi (tangerine peel).
Decoct strongly and drink to detoxify.
Formula for specific fish poisoning:
Lugen (reed rhizome).
Decoct and drink to detoxify.
Crawfish with facing eyes, spotted legs, and red eyes should not be eaten.
Formula for crawfish poisoning:
Zisu (perilla).
Decoct and drink three sheng. Perilla seed juice is also effective.
Another formula:
Winter melon juice, three sheng. Eating winter melon is also acceptable.
Crawfish before frost are toxic; only fully mature ones (after White Dew solar term) are safe and delicious. Spiders falling into food are toxic; do not eat. Food contaminated by bees, flies, insects, or ants causes disease.
