The *Jingui Yaolue* (Essential Prescriptions from the Golden Cabinet) states: In men, if the pulse is large in a healthy state, it indicates consumption disease (Lao); if the pulse is extremely empty, it also indicates consumption disease. If a man has a pale complexion, it primarily indicates thirst and blood loss. Sudden panting and palpitations with a floating pulse indicate deficiency in the interior. If a man's pulse is empty, deep, wiry, and forceless, accompanied by alternating chills and fever, shortness of breath, abdominal urgency and pain, difficult urination, a white complexion, occasional dizziness combined with epistaxis, and fullness in the lower abdomen, these are all caused by consumption. The disease of consumption is characterized by a floating and large pulse, vexation and heat in the hands and feet, exacerbation in spring and summer, and remission in autumn and winter. Internal cold leads to spontaneous emission of essence; the body becomes sore and emaciated, unable to walk. If a man's pulse is faint, weak, and choppy, it indicates infertility; the essence and qi are clear and cold. Those who suffer from seminal emission often have tense and urgent lower abdomen, coldness at the glans penis, blurred vision, hair loss, and a pulse that is extremely empty, cun kou (cork-like), and slow, indicating incomplete digestion of food in stool, blood loss, and seminal emission.
[Guizhi Jia Longgu Muli Tang] (Cinnamon Twig Decoction plus Dragon Bone and Oyster Shell) treats pulses that are variously cork-like, moving, faint, or tight. It treats seminal emission in men and dream intercourse in women.
Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, bark removed), Shaoyao (Peony Root) (each 3 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried) (2 liang), Longgu (Dragon Bone), Muli (Oyster Shell) (each 3 liang).
These five herbs are coarsely chopped. Boil in 7 sheng of water with 3 slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and 12 broken Dazao (Jujube fruits) until reduced to 3 sheng. Strain and divide into three doses. According to *Duanju*: If the pulse is floating and there is sweating, remove Guizhi and add Baiwei (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) and Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), each 3 fen. Hence it is called Erjia Longgu Tang (Double-Added Dragon Bone Decoction).
[Huangqi Jianzhong Tang] (Astragalus Decoction to Establish the Middle) treats various deficiencies and insufficiencies. It is used for excessive labor injury or failure to recover after illness.
Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Guigui (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (each 3 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root) (2 liang), Baishao (White Peony Root) (6 liang).
These four herbs are coarsely chopped. Take 3 qian per dose, boil in 1.5 sheng of water with 3 slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and 1 jujube until reduced to 0.7. Strain, add a small amount of Yitang (Maltose), and re-boil until dissolved. Take warm, on an empty stomach or before meals. According to *Jiyan Fang*: For vomiting bitter fluid, add Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger); for abdominal fullness, remove Yitang (Maltose) and Dazao (Jujube fruits), add Fuling (Poria). For lung deficiency and qi tonification, adding Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) 5 liang is excellent.
[Renshen Huangqi San] (Ginseng and Astragalus Powder) treats deficiency consumption with pathogenic heat. Symptoms include emaciation, limb fatigue, five-palm heat, dry throat, red cheeks, palpitations, tidal fever, night sweats, reduced appetite, cough with purulent blood, and chest/hypochondriac discomfort.
Renshen (Ginseng Root, rhizome removed) (1 liang), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Fuling (Poria) (each 2 liang), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (2.5 liang).

These nine herbs are made into coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose, boil in 1.5 sheng of water with 50 grains of Xiaomai (Wheat) until reduced to 1 sheng. Strain and take warm after meals, three times daily. Also treats cough with purulent blood. Suitable for unmarried men and women.
[Chaihu San] (Bupleurum Powder) treats deficiency consumption with emaciation, sallow complexion, limb weakness, anorexia, frequent night sweats, and persistent cough.

These five herbs are powdered. Take 2 qian per dose, boil in 1.5 sheng of water with 2 Wumei (Chinese Plum) and 5 leaves of Qinghao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba) until reduced to 1 sheng. Strain and take warm after meals.
[Qinjiao Biejia San] (Gentian and Turtle Shell Powder) treats bone-steaming high fever, muscle emaciation, red lips, red cheeks, coarse breathing, limb fatigue, and night sweats.
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, skirt removed, butter-fried, using the nine-rib variety), Digupi (Lycii Cortex) (each 1 liang).
Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (each 0.5 liang).
These six herbs are made into coarse powder. Take 5 qian per dose, boil in 1 sheng of water with 5 leaves of Qinghao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba) and 1 Wumei (Chinese Plum) until reduced to 0.7. Strain and take warm on an empty stomach and before bed.
[Renshen Digupi San] (Ginseng and Lycium Bark Powder) treats accumulated cold in the zang organs and heat in the ying level. Palpation feels deficient, while lifting feels excess. This is the pulse of yin deficiency and yang excess.
Renshen (Ginseng Root), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Huangqi (Astragali Radix).
Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) (each 1.5 liang), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (each 1 liang), Fuling (Poria) (0.5 liang).
These eight herbs are coarsely chopped. Take 1 liang per dose, boil in 1 sheng of water with 3 slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and 1 jujube until reduced to 1 sheng. Strain and take warm slowly. Take continuously through the night. Intermittently take Shengjing Buxu Dihuang Wan (Kidney Essence Tonifying Rehmannia Pills).
[Dixian San] (Earth Immortal Powder) treats accumulated heat in the heart causing dry mouth, or vexation and thirst, red cheeks, and tongue stiffness. It generates fluids and treats residual heat after sweating.
Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 1 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Gancao (Licorice Root) (each 0.5 liang).
These four herbs are made into coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose, boil in 1 sheng of water with 5-7 leaves of Qinghao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba) until reduced to 0.7. Strain and take warm at any time. If Qinghao is unavailable, use 5-7 pieces of Zhuye (Bambusa Leaf).
[Tiaozhong Yiqi Tang] (Regulate Middle and Boost Qi Decoction) treats spleen and stomach damage due to hunger, fullness, and labor, leading to insufficient yuan qi. The pulse is wiry or surging and slow, forceless upon pressure, occasionally choppy under the middle finger. Symptoms include heavy body, limb fatigue, joint pain, chest fullness, shortness of breath, obstruction in the diaphragm and pharynx, irritability, tinnitus, deafness, fleshy growths in eyes, heat congestion like fire, blurred vision, salivation, loss of taste, fluctuating weight, lethargy, reddish urine, or clear frequent urination, drinking then defecating, sporadic undigested diarrhea, abdominal deficiency pain, and anorexia.
Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (1 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix).
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Baishao (White Peony Root), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (each 1.5 qian, 3 fen respectively).
Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (2 fen), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) (15 berries).
These ten herbs are coarsely chopped as one dose. Boil in 2 sheng of water until reduced to 1 sheng. Strain and take warm before meals. Commentary: The *Neijing* states, "Labor consumes qi, heat injures qi." Using the sweetness of Huangqi (Astragali Radix) and Gancao (Licorice Root) to drain heat is primary. The sourness of Baishao (White Peony Root) and Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) can gather consumed and scattered qi.
It also says, "Treat labor with warmth, treat deficiency with warmth." Renshen (Ginseng Root) is sweet and warm to tonify insufficient qi; Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) is acrid and warm to tonify insufficient blood, thus serving as deputy ministers. Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) are sweet, bitter, and warm to remove guest heat in the stomach and nourish stomach qi, serving as assistants. Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) are bitter and neutral, with thin flavors, representing yang within yin. Because spleen and stomach qi sinks and upper qi is insufficient, we draw yang from yin to tonify it. They also guide the Yangming meridian, serving as guides.
[Danggui Buxue Tang] (Angelica Blood Tonifying Decoction) treats muscle heat, restlessness, thirst with desire to drink, red eyes and face, day and night without cessation. The pulse is surging and large but empty, completely void upon heavy pressure. The *Neijing* states: "Empty pulse indicates blood deficiency; blood deficiency generates heat." The syndrome resembles Baihu Tang syndrome, distinguished only by the pulse not being long and solid. Misusing Baihu Tang will be critical. This disease arises from muscle fatigue and labor.
Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (1 liang), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, wine-washed) (2 qian).
These two herbs are coarsely chopped as one dose. Boil in 3 sheng of water until reduced to 1 sheng. Strain and take warm before meals.
[Xijiao Ziheche Wan] (Rhinoceros Horn and Placenta Pills) treats transmission corpse consumption (tuberculosis); taking for three months ensures recovery. Other consumption syndromes heal in just a few doses. This medicine is miraculous.
Ziheche (Human Placenta, one piece, i.e., fetal membrane. Soak in rice washing water overnight, wash clean, bake dry) Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, butter-fried).
Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, rhizome removed), Huhuanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma variant/Huahuanglian), Shaoyao (Peony Root), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma).
Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus, heart removed), Baigupixin (Heart of Drum Skin, vinegar-fried), Longdancao (Gentianae Radix), Huangyaozi (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma).
Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, shaved powder), Pengzhu (Curcumae Zedoariae Rhizoma), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (each 2.5 qian, 1.5 qian respectively).
Zhusha (Cinnabar) (2 xian).
These fifteen herbs are powdered, mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Coat with Zhusha (Cinnabar). Take 20 pills per dose, washed down with warm wine. Take on an empty stomach before meals. If there is diaphragmatic heat, take after meals. Severe cases require no more than one batch.
[Renshen Chaihu San] (Ginseng and Bupleurum Powder) treats pathogenic heat lodging in meridians, muscle heat, phlegm cough, five-palm irritability, head and eye dizziness/pain, and night sweats. This medicine harmonizes true qi, relieves labor fatigue, and treats women's blood heat, deficiency consumption, and bone-steaming.
Renshen (Ginseng Root), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Baifuling (White Poria), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix).
Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), Banxiaqu (Pinelliae Fermented Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Gange (Puerariae Radix).
Chishaoyao (Red Peony Root) (equal parts).
These nine herbs are powdered. Take 3 qian per dose, boil in 1 sheng of water with 4 slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and 2 jujubes until reduced to 0.8. Take hot at any time. Suitable for any labor-heat syndrome. Stop when the disease recedes. Generally, it penetrates the muscle to resolve heat; Gange (Puerariae Radix) is the sovereign, Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) is secondary. Hence, Shengma Ge Gen Tang (Cimicifuga and Kudzu Decoction) is the premier muscle-releasing formula.
[Qingshen Ganlu Wan] (Clear Spirit Sweet Dew Pills) treats male and female deficiency consumption where the patient has not reached the stage of great bone withering or great flesh sinking. All such cases are treated.
Shengdihuang Zhi (Juice of Rehmanniae Radix), Niunai Zhi (Cow Milk Juice, raw), Bailian'ou Zhi (Juice of White Lotus Rhizome) (equal parts).

These six herbs are powdered. Mix with the previous paste to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 30-50 pills per dose, washed down with Ginseng decoction. At any time.
[Shuanghe San] (Double Harmony Powder) treats pathogen entering meridians, emaciation, muscle heat, pushing out the old and generating the new. It resolves Cold Damage, seasonal epidemics, heatstroke, and latent summerheat.
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (4 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root) (1 liang).
Powder these. Take 2 qian per dose, boil in 1 sheng of water until reduced to 0.8. Take hot after meals. In winter, this medicine moistens the lungs and stops cough, removing congestion heat. In spring and summer, it protects against Cold Damage and seasonal qi, resolving summerheat toxicity. It should always be available; suitable for all ages.
[Sijunzi Tang] (Four Gentlemen Decoction) treats Ying and Wei qi deficiency.
Renshen (Ginseng Root), Gancao (Licorice Root), Fuling (Poria), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma).
Powder these equally. Take 2 qian per dose, boil in 1 sheng of water until reduced to 0.7. Take warm at any time.
[Zhudu Wan] (Pig Stomach Pills) treats men with thin muscles and weak qi, cough, gradually developing into consumption disease.
Muli (Oyster Shell, calcined), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (each 4 liang), Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix) (3 liang).
Powder these three herbs. Boil one pig stomach until soft and cooked. Chop and grind into a paste. Mix with the powder to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills per dose, washed down with rice drink. Three to four times daily. This medicine is miraculous. Thin people become fat upon taking it. Its mechanism is unfathomable.
[Suanzaoren Wan] (Sour Jujube Seed Pills) treats Gallbladder meridian insufficiency, Heart meridian heat, mental confusion, fearfulness, frequent fright, unhappy mood, occasional night sweats, deficiency vexation, insomnia, improvement in morning and worsening in evening, or vertigo.

[Dingzhi Wan] (Calming Will Pills) treats Heart qi insufficiency.
Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) (each 2 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Baifuling (White Poria) (each 3 liang).
Powder these. Mix with honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Coat with Cinnabar. Take 7 pills, increasing to 20. Wash down with warm rice soup. After meals. Before bed. Three times daily.
