Fan Qingzan, aged over fifty. He had a chronic history of phlegm and cough. In the autumn of the Yiyu year, while in Wuzhou (place name), he suddenly vomited blood, and the condition was quite critical. Mengying diagnosed: "This is Qi deficiency leading to the loss of control over blood." Although he had always suffered from cough and Yin deficiency, Yin-nourishing medicines must absolutely not be taken. Moreover, this is not vomiting blood due to Floating Yang (Ge Yang); Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) and Aconite (Fuzi) are even more contraindicated. The prescription used was: Radix Codonopsis (Ludangshen) [roasted with honey], Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu), Poria (Fuling), Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gancao), Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao), Semen Lablab Album (Bian Dou), Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (Jupi), Fructus Chaenomelis (Mugua), Radix Paeoniae Alba (Baishao) [stir-fried with wine]. After five doses, the condition stabilized. Subsequently, Gancao and Mugua were removed, and Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shudi), Asini Corii Colla (Ejiao), Fulgur (Zishiying), Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Os Draconis (Longgu), and Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum (Muli) were added, decocted into a paste and taken, resulting in a complete cure. There was no recurrence later. Fan returned home years later and died of another illness.
Wu Yongyan, a native of Shexian, read the passage in the *Analects* regarding "not removing ginger from meals" ten years ago and thus took ginger daily without stopping, even in midsummer. Three years ago, he suffered from massive hemorrhage. Although treated with cooling medicines and recovered, he frequently experienced rising fire sensations, which persisted until then. In deep winter, he consulted Mengying. He wore no silk garments, and his head and face were covered in profuse sweat. He stated: "Taking Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) and Phellodendri Cortex (Huanglian) worsens my irritability and thirst because bitter flavors can transform into dryness; using Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdi) causes chest stuffiness, stagnation, and loss of appetite because sweet flavors can slow down the middle Jiao; sugarcane and pear have similar effects." Palpation revealed a slippery and rapid pulse when pressed deeply. This indicated accumulated heat from the past, deeply hidden inside. The prescription was Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) minus Gancao and Coicis Semen (Jingmi), plus Bambusae Folium (Zhuye), Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam (Zhuru), Trichosanthis Radix (Huafen), Aureliae Corpus (Haizhe), Dioscoreae Bulbiferae (Biqi), Lonicerae Japonicae Flos (Yinhua), and Phaseoli Volubilis Semen (Lvdou). Taken freely, he gradually expectorated gelatinous phlegm and was cured.
In the spring of the Dingwei year, Lady Jin, mother of Jin Langran, suddenly vomited blood violently, with cold limbs and spontaneous sweating. Mengying palpated the pulse: wiry and choppy, and observed the blood color as purple and dark. This was Liver Qi stagnation condensing into blood stasis. Although the condition could be cured, recurrence would be difficult to treat. The prescription included: Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix (Danshen), Moutan Cortex (Danpi), Leonuri Herba (Chongwei), Inulae Flos (Xuanfu), Poria (Fuling), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi), Platycladi Cacumen (Baiye), Curcumae Tuber (Yujin), and Sargassum (Haizao). The patient recovered after one cup. However, unable to control anger, she vomited blood again after two years and eventually died.
Lady Wang, daughter-in-law of Military Officer Wangzineng, suffered from chronic hematemesis that doctors could not cure. Mengying examined her: the pulse was wiry and slippery, beating forcefully against the fingers, more pronounced on the right hand. She was thirsty and preferred cold drinks, found it difficult to swallow food and grain, urinated like boiling water, and could not sleep at night. Long-term use of Yin-nourishing medicines had yielded no effect. Mengying prescribed Weijing Tang (Reed Shoot Decoction) combined with Xue Geng Tang (Snow Soup Decoction), adding Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu), Trichosanthis Radix (Huafen), Loquat Leaf (Pipaye), Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam (Zhuru), Inulae Flos (Xuanfu), Talcum (Huashi), and Pear Juice (Lizhi). Administered in large doses, she recovered after thirty doses.
Subsequently, the officer returned to the provincial capital. Suffering from long-term worry and fatigue, his True Yin was depleted, making him incurable. He soon passed away.
Mr. Zheng vomited a bowlful of blood. Mengying palpated the pulse: the right Guan position was surging and slippery. He had spontaneous sweating and thirst. Any slight movement caused blood to overflow upwards. Everyone feared collapse (Tuos) and wanted to use tonification. Mengying said: "If it is collapse, I will take responsibility." He prescribed Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) with American Ginseng (Yangshengshen) and Charred Rhubarb (Dahuang Tan). One dose resulted in immediate recovery.
Suo, in his early twenties, vomited blood. Physician Yang consecutively administered Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction), causing the vomiting to worsen. Mengying observed a red glow on his face and a hollow, large pulse form. He asked: "Are your feet cold?" They were indeed. He then prescribed Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) to wash down Qianjin Rougui Wan (One Qian of Cinnamon Heart). The patient recovered after one cup.
Lady Shao, wife of Shao Zishou, suffered from hematemesis. Her skin was dry and rough, she was thirsty, and her pulse was deficient and large. Mengying said: "This is Yin deficiency in the Qi aspect." Warm tonification is incorrect, and heavy nourishment is also wrong. The prescription included: American Ginseng (Yangshengshen), Astragali Radix (Huangqi), "Er Dong" (Tianmen Dong and Maidong), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu), Lilii Bulbus (Baihe), Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma (Yuzhu), Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu), Mori Folium (Sangye), and Loquat Leaf (Pipaye). She recovered after taking it.
Sun Zhizhong, four days before Spring Festival, suddenly suffered from severe epistaxis. Various methods failed to stop it. Mengying was summoned late at night. The pulse was wiry and rapid. He said: "Winter warmth leaks out; the heavenly mandate does not govern closure and storage. Tonight's loud thunder resonates with the human body, stirring up Liver Yang, causing blood to surge upwards. Do not assume deficiency or collapse due to his obesity and head sweating, nor administer warm tonics." The prescription included: Scrophulariae Radix (Yuanshen), Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdi), Rhinocerotis Cornu (Xijiao), Ostreae Concha (Muli), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu), Raw Paeoniae Radix Alba (Sheng Baishao), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi), Poria (Fuling), Platycladi Cacumen (Cebaiye), and Children's Urine (Tong Niao). Improvement was seen after one dose, and cure after two.
Later, he suffered from flank pain and purulent discharge (from breast/abscess). People found this strange. Mengying prescribed Ganlu Yin (Sweet Dew Drink) with Ligustrum Lucidum Fructus (Nvzhenzi), Ecliptae Herba (Hanlian), and "San Jia" (Three Shells). He recovered.
Wu Sen, servant of Wu Yunxiang, contracted a pathogenic factor in Yue. Upon returning to Hangzhou, he suffered from several sheng of epistaxis. His tongue coating was yellow, he was extremely thirsty, and his pulse was slippery and surging. Mengying administered two doses of Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction), bringing peace. Suddenly eating rich and greasy foods triggered a relapse with high fever, epigastric fullness, dizziness, and fatigue. Mengying prescribed Zhishi Zhizi Chi Tang (Gardenia, Bitter Orange, and Fermented Soybean Decoction). He recovered. Several days later, he became lethargic, febrile, and sweaty, with a crimson tongue and scanty, painful urination. He sought Mengying again. The left Chie position was fine, rapid, and hollow; the right Chie position was surging and large. This was "female labor relapse" (relapse due to sexual activity). Upon inquiry, it was confirmed. Large doses of Yin-nourishing and heat-clearing medicines were given, along with Rat Droppings (Shushi) swallowed, leading to recovery.
Zi Xun, son of Jinshi Zhao Qiu, always suffered from epistaxis after consuming sugarcane. Some suspected sugarcane was excessively hot. Mengying said: "Sugarcane is sweet and cool, but its sweetness is too strong, providing ample fluid-generating power. Its cooling nature is weak, lacking sufficient heat-scouring function. It is most suitable for those with fluid deficiency and mild heat. It is a fine medicine for rescuing fluids in Wind-Warmth syndromes, which I call 'Heavenly Born Pulse-Replenishing Decoction'. If taken by those with abundant damp-heat, phlegm-fire internally, it leads to what Yu Shi called 'reversing stomach transformation', turning into heat. All medicines should be applied according to the person's constitution; how can one stick to fixed cold or hot properties? Zi Xun's constitution is Water deficiency and Fire hyperactivity. Sugarcane cannot counteract it; instead, it transforms into heat following its own qi, just as sugarcane becomes sugar when roasted by fire, completely losing its original cooling nature. Goji berries are the same."
Pu Aitian, over sixty years old, suddenly suffered from epistaxis. Various methods failed to stop it. Mengying was urgently summoned. His complexion was dark black with a red glow, and the pulse was wiry, surging, and hollow. It was learned that he had widely taken Yang-assisting medicines during winter. This was a syndrome of Heat hyperactivity and Yin deficiency. Large doses of Rhinocerotis Cornu (Xijiao), Scrophulariae Radix (Yuanshen), Imperatae Rhizoma (Maogen), Ligustrum Lucidum Fructus (Nvzhen), Ecliptae Herba (Hanlian), Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu), Poria (Fuling), Alisma Rhizoma (Zexie), Asparagi Radix (Tiandong), and Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu) were administered. He stabilized immediately. Subsequent Yin-nourishing and filling treatments led to recovery.
The fourth daughter-in-law of County Magistrate Wu Yunxiang often suffered from abdominal distension, reduced appetite, gingival bleeding, and leg pain. Long-term treatment was ineffective, and muscles gradually wasted away. Mengying palpated the pulse: wiry, fine, and rapid. He said: "Although Liver Qi is stagnant, there is Yin deficiency and Ying-level heat. How can acrid-unblocking and warm-moving methods be used?" The prescription included: Pruni Semen (Wumei), Scutellariae Radix (Huanglian), Meliae Fructus (Lianshi), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi), Fructus Chaenomelis (Mugua), Polygoni Multiflori Radix (Shouwu), Trionycis Carapax (Biejia), Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam (Zhuru), and Fritillariae Bulbus (Beimu). She recovered. Subsequent sweet-moistening and Yin-nourishing treatments restored muscle mass and stomach function, regularized menstruation, harmonized the pulse, and eliminated years of chronic disease.
Wife of Shen Yueting suffered from gingival bleeding for five days without stopping, having lost much blood. Various prescriptions failed. Mengying palpated the pulse: wiry, slippery, and surging upwards. He prescribed: Rhinocerotis Cornu (Xijiao), Lantanae Radix (Zelan), Scrophulariae Radix (Yuanshen), Inulae Flos (Xuanfu), Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdi), Trichosanthis Radix (Huafen), Poria (Fuling), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi), Peach Seed (Taoren), and Alisma Rhizoma (Zexie). She stabilized. Later, upon inquiry about her menstruation, it was found to be delayed for the month. This was retrograde menstruation. Subsequent Yin-nourishing and heat-clearing treatments led to gradual recovery.
Miss Sun, nearing fifteen years of age, suffered from chronic gingival bleeding. Many doctors could not treat it. Mengying diagnosed: "The six pulses are slow and slippery. Menarche is approaching!" He prescribed: Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix (Danshen), Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdi), Peach Seed (Taoren), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi), Poria (Fuling), Clematidis Radix et Rhizoma (Baiwei), Talcum (Huashi), and Leonuri Fructus (Chongweizi). Improvement was seen after one dose, and cure after several days. Menstruation soon started, with no other issues.
Mrs. Xie Zaihua, who usually suffered from Liver Convulsion (Gan Jue), received a prescription from Mengying in the Gui Mao year and remained safe for six years. This summer, she occasionally suffered from gingival bleeding, which gradually became foul-smelling. She had headache, menstrual obstruction, and insomnia all night. This was caused by Dr. Qin treating it as "Floating Yang" syndrome and administering several doses of Shenqi Tang (Kidney Qi Decoction), worsening the condition. Mengying prescribed large doses of Shenxi Tang (Divine Calamity Rescuing Decoction) with Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu) and Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai). She recovered in ten days.
A certain man suffered from hematochezia. Doctors used warm tonification. The bleeding stopped, but diarrhea and edema ensued. This lasted half a year. Mengying palpated: rapid pulse, crimson tongue. He said: "This disease originally belonged to damp-heat. Warm tonification damaged the Yin fluids." The prescription included: Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao), Mori Folium (Sangye), Moutan Cortex (Danpi), Lonicerae Japonicae Flos (Yinhua), Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu), Meliae Fructus (Lianshi), Benincasae Exocarpium (Dongguapi), Trionycis Carapax (Biejia), and Chicken Gizzard Membrane (Jineijin). He recovered in over ten days.
Wang Kairong accidentally suffered from severe abdominal colic. After self-medicating with various drugs for Sha disease, he began passing blood from the rectum like a gush. Mengying palpated: the left pulse was harmonious; the right Guan and Chie positions were wiry, large, and slippery. His face was oily and red, he panted, and could not sleep. He prescribed: Weijing Tang (Reed Shoot Decoction) combined with Lingliao San (Corydalis and Cyperus Powder), adding Lonicerae Japonicae Flos (Yinhua), Platycladi Cacumen (Cebaiye), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi), Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), and Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian). After two doses, facial redness subsided, and bleeding stopped. Then, Cebaiye and Yinhua were removed, and Xue Geng Tang (Snow Soup Decoction) with dried lotus stem (Kuhegan) were added. After another two doses, he had one night of fever, profuse whole-body sweating, and the abdominal pain and distension vanished completely. He could sleep peacefully and eat porridge. The prescription was changed to: Glehniae Radix (Shashen), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu), Trichosanthis Radix (Huafen), Mori Folium (Sangye), Loquat Leaf (Pipaye), Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao), Tangerine Network (Jieluo), Apricot Seed (Xingren), Benincasae Semen (Dongguazi), Imperatae Rhizoma (Maogen), and Lotus Stem (Hegan). After three doses, bowel movements occurred, the pulse became soft, and digestion improved.
On New Year's Day of the Wushen year, Military Officer Chen Qiucha suddenly passed several sheng of black blood from the rectum, followed by massive vomiting of bright red blood, sweating, coma, cold limbs, convulsions, restlessness, and delirious speech. Mengying was urgently summoned. The family knelt and wept for his life. Palpation revealed: the left pulse was almost imperceptible; the right was wiry and soft, rapid when pressed. Given his age of sixty-eight, everyone feared collapse. Ginseng soup was prepared for administration. Mengying urgently stopped them, saying: "In advanced age, Yin levels have been deficient for a long time. Massive loss of Liver blood has caused sudden stirring of Wind-Yang. This is likely caused by anger combined with the intake of hot medicines." His wife said: "There has been depression and anger recently, but no hot medicines were taken. Only ginger-date soup was taken for a long time in winter, and a bottle of medicinal liquor from Duozhou was drunk." Mengying said: "Exactly." The prescription was: American Ginseng (Yangshengshen), Rhinocerotis Cornu (Xijiao), Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdi), Lonicerae Japonicae Flos (Yinhua), Phaseoli Volubilis Semen (Lvdou), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi), Scrophulariae Radix (Yuanshen), Poria (Fuling), Saigae Tataricae Cornu (Lingyangjiao), and Imperatae Rhizoma (Maogen). This was mixed with hot children's urine and administered. Externally, heated iron was quenched in vinegar for inhalation, Longgu and Muli powder was applied to absorb sweat, and raw Fuzi (Aconite) paste was applied to Yongquan (KI1) to guide floating Yang downwards.
After two doses, bleeding stopped, and the left pulse gradually reappeared. Guiban (Tortoise Shell) and Biejia (Softshell Turtle Shell) were added. After three doses, consciousness cleared, symptoms subsided, and he could sip porridge. Xijiao and Lingyangjiao were removed, and Maidong, Tiandong, Nvzhenzi, and Hanliancao were added. Sleep and appetite improved daily. Half a month later, he passed black, dry stool. After twenty days, the color of urine and stool normalized. Tonifying medicines were used for final recovery. He continued serving as a patrol officer, vigorous as usual. In autumn, he went to Shaoxing for his post and died of another illness in the autumn of the You year.
Hematochezia had persisted for over thirty years, accompanied by emaciation, lower back pain, cough with phlegm, and rebellious Qi. It seemed appropriate to use warm tonification. Shen Yunshu from Jiading, suffering from this critically, asked Mengying if he could return home in time. Palpation revealed: wiry and rapid pulse. Tongue inspection: yellow coating. Inquiry about urine: short and red. Mengying said: "This is hemorrhoidal bleeding. It was likely mismanaged with warm tonification." If you take my medicine, you will recover in ten days. Yunshu was grateful, dismissed contrary opinions, and took the prescription directly. He recovered in less than ten days. The formula was: Weijing Tang (Reed Shoot Decoction) combined with Baitouweng Tang (Pulsatilla Decoction), adding Loquat Leaf (Pipaye), Inulae Flos (Xuanfuhua), Platycladi Cacumen (Cebaiye), and Nymphaeae Nelumbonis Rhizomatis Node (Oujie). This combines lung-sweeping and phlegm-resolving with liver-clearing and blood-cooling.
Madam Zhu suffered from hematuria for five or six years. Doctors treated it as strangury (Lin). Mengying examined: wiry and rapid pulse, yellow coating, bitter taste in mouth, headache, and hot urination. He said: "This is hematuria. The method should be Liver clearing. It is vastly different from chronic strangury which requires tonification." The patient agreed strongly. Presumably, she knew the cause herself but was shy to describe it in detail, so doctors only knew it as strangury.
