Commentary states: Phlegm in the diaphragm (Ge Tan) arises from the dysfunction of Qi ascending and descending, leading to stagnation and obstruction of body fluids. The Qi of water and fluid accumulation gathers above the diaphragm; over time, it solidifies into a mass, causing urgency and constriction in the airway. This results in symptoms such as chest and epigastric fullness and stuffiness, shortness of breath, and an inability to lie flat. In severe cases, dizziness and vertigo occur, accompanied by frequent nausea and vomiting.
