Discourse states: When the most refined essence first combines and the primordial qi begins to condense, conception occurs, forming the fetal sac, which gradually develops into physical form. While in the womb, the fetus is influenced by what the mother hears and sees. Therefore, sages instruct people to observe propriety and recite poetry and books to cultivate virtue, thereby ensuring the mother's fortune, longevity, and moral integrity.
In the first month of pregnancy, it is called "Shi Pei" (Beginning Embryo). The diet should be fine, thoroughly cooked, sweet, and delicious; barley is suitable to eat, while pungent and fishy/meaty foods should be avoided. At this stage, the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian nourishes the fetus. Acupuncture and moxibustion on the abdomen should not be performed to avoid disturbing the fetal qi and causing fear.
In the second month of pregnancy, it is called "Shi Gao" (Beginning Paste). Avoid pungent and gamey-smelling foods. One must reside in a quiet place. If one violates these precepts or experiences emotional turbulence, pain will occur throughout all joints. This is referred to as the initial consolidation of the fetus.
In the third month of pregnancy, it is called "Shi Tai" (Beginning Fetus). At this time, the fetal image begins to transform and has not yet taken a fixed shape; it changes upon seeing external objects. It is desirable for the pregnant woman to see nobles, kings, and dignitaries who are dignified and beautiful, so as to influence her temperament positively.
In the fourth month of pregnancy, the fetus begins to receive the essence of Water to form blood vessels. The diet should include rice and japonica glutinous rice, and soups made from fish and wild geese. This is described as enriching the blood to open the ears and eyes and circulate through the meridians.
In the fifth month of pregnancy, the fetus begins to receive the essence of Fire to form its internal organs' qi. Sleep should involve rising late. One should bathe and wash clothes, dwell in deep and secluded places, and wear thick clothing. Emotional fluctuations such as anger and joy must be regulated.
In the sixth month of pregnancy, the fetus begins to receive the essence of Metal to form tendons. The body should engage in slight labor and not remain static; one should go out to the wilderness and frequently watch running dogs and galloping horses to exercise the muscles and bones.
In the seventh month of pregnancy, the fetus begins to receive the essence of Water to form bones. The body should be active, limbs shaken, avoiding stillness. Movements involving flexion and extension help to circulate blood and qi. The dwelling must be dry and ventilated.
In the eighth month of pregnancy, the fetus begins to receive the essence of Earth to form skin and connective tissue. One should maintain a calm heart and quiet breathing, avoiding excessive exertion of breath. This is said to tighten the interstices (cou li) and bring luster to the complexion.
In the ninth month of pregnancy, the fetus begins to receive the essence of Stone to form hair and skin. The five zang organs, six fu organs, and all joints are fully prepared. Sweet wine and delicious food should be consumed; clothes should be loose, and belts untightened. One should not dwell in damp or cold places, nor should one overeat.
In the tenth month of pregnancy, the five zang organs, six fu organs, joints, and spirit are all complete, awaiting the proper time for birth.
To summarize: In the first month, the embryo forms; in the second, paste begins; in the third, the fetus forms; in the fourth, the physical form is established; in the fifth, movement begins; in the sixth, sinews and bones stand; in the seventh, hair grows; in the eighth... [text ends]
