The Classics state: The Stomach is the sea of water and grain; the Spleen is the source of transformation and production. Danxi said: The Spleen possesses the virtue of stillness like Kun (Earth), yet has the movement like Qian (Heaven). Stomach Yang governs Qi, while Spleen Yin governs Blood. The Stomach is responsible for receiving and accepting, while the Spleen is responsible for transportation and transformation. One receives and one transforms, generating essence and fluids; clear Qi ascends, while turbid waste descends. When food enters the Stomach, its essence overflows and is transported upward to the Spleen. The Spleen scatters the essence, sending it upward to return to the Lung, which regulates the water passages and transports it downward to the Bladder. The clear part becomes Ying (Nutritive) Qi, and the turbid part becomes Wei (Defensive) Qi. Clear Yang disperses into the Couli (interstices), while turbid Yin returns to the Zang organs. Water and essence are distributed throughout the four directions, and the five meridians run in parallel, harmonizing with the four seasons to nourish the five Zang organs. If diet is regulated and cold/heat are appropriate, then the Spleen and Stomach will be strong and solid, food will digest easily, essence and micro-nutrients will be transformed and transported, filling the five Zang and six Fu organs, and nourishing the four limbs and hundred bones. What disease could there be! If the Spleen and Stomach are weak, then food will not digest, the function of transformation and transport will cease, the merit of generation will fail, leading to drowsiness and fatigue, and diseases will arise. The Spleen and Stomach are the root of the five Zang organs; food and drink are the great origin of life. Regulating the Spleen and Stomach is the royal way in medicine, truly profound indeed. It is said that when the Spleen and Stomach are healthy, all diseases are pacified; when they are weak, all ailments arise like bees.
