The waist is the mansion of the Kidney (Shen). The Kidney governs water and receives and stores the essence of the five zang organs and six fu organs. After a Shanghan (Cold Damage) disease, the essence and blood are insufficient, and the Kidney Qi is weak. Wind pathogens invade the deficiency and lodge in the Foot Shaoyin (Kidney) meridian, flowing into the waist and feet, where they stagnate and do not disperse. Thus, the joints and mechanisms become unsmooth, resulting in pain in the waist and feet. There are also cases of pre-existing wind-warmth lumbar pain from the Kidney meridian that recur due to post-illness deficiency of meridian Qi; these should be treated according to their respective symptoms with appropriate formulas.
