Humans may suffer from pathogenic wind-heat and phlegm-fluids, which attack and accumulate in the zang-fu organs, leading to disharmony of Yin and Yang. The Liver Qi stagnates, accumulating heat-toxin qi that rushes upward to the eyes, causing pain in the eyeballs.
In severe cases,
the eyeballs protrude.
The *Longmu Lun* (Treatise on Dragon and Wood) states: Sudden protrusion of the eyeball with external obstruction eye disease, at its onset, is often due to improper diaphoresis (inducing sweating) or attacks by toxic wind from the five zang organs. Full recovery takes time.
A verse says: When eyes suddenly hurt, the eyeballs protrude high; this is caused by toxic wind encountering heat from the five zang organs. First, drink Jiegeng Tang (Platycodon Decoction) to purge the Liver, then take pills or powders to gradually dissipate the condition. To return to normalcy eventually, follow the prescription.
Huanglian Wan (Coptis Pill), sourced from *Shenghui Fang* (Holy Benefit Formulary), treats heat-toxin attacking the eyes, causing eyeball protrusion.
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, remove roots), Xiniu Xie (Rhinocerotis Cornu, rhinoceros horn powder), Difuzi (Kochiae Fructus), Juemingzi (Cassiae Semen), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix, chopped), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen, each 1 liang).
Usage: Take before retiring to bed.
Huanjing Wan (Restore Vision Pill), sourced from *Longmu Lun*, treats eye protrusion with external obstruction.

Weirui San (Polygonatum Powder), sourced from *Shenghui Fang*, treats protrusion of the cornea (black pupil) due to wind-heat congestion, rushing upward causing pain.
Weirui (Polygonati Rhizoma), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, remove heart and roast, each 1 liang), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, remove radicle), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis, chopped), Ziqin (Scutellariae Radix young shoots), Lingyangjiao Xie (Saigae Tataricae Cornu powder), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, chopped), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, roasted).
Usage: Add Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 1 qian), take warm after meals. Take again before retiring to bed.
Xuanshen San (Scrophulariae Powder), sourced from *Shenghui Fang*, treats sudden eye protrusion and high eyeballs.
Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix, 1.5 liang), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, remove radicle), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, chop, grind, slight roast), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Lingyangjiao Xie (Saigae Tataricae Cornu powder), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, remove radicle), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix).
Usage: Decoct until 60% remains, strain, take warm.
Mendong Chongweizi Tang (Ophiopogon and Leonurus Decoction), sourced from *Shengji Zonglu*, treats redness and pain of the eyes due to wind-heat attacking, where eyeballs tend to protrude.
