Crane's Knee Wind refers to the condition where a patient's knees are swollen and painful, while the thighs and calves are atrophied and emaciated, leaving only skin covering the bones. The joints are contracted and curled, unable to flex or extend. One should take Dafangfeng Tang (Great Wind-Expelling Decoction).

Indicated for Crane's Knee Wind, as well as wind-contraction disorders of the waist and knees. (Use whole scorpions with head and tail intact): Tao Ren (Raw Peach Kernel), Baifuzi (Aconitum Coreanum Rhizome), Awei (Styrax), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig), Anshixiang (Benzoin), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) (each 1 liang). Anshixiang is ground together with Tao Ren.
Ganye Wan Pill (Dry Scorpion Pill) (from *Shengji Zonglu* [Compendium of Holy Relief])

Ganye (Dry Scorpion, head and tail intact, stir-fried), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Anshixiang (Benzoin, ground together with Hu Tao Ren [Walnut Kernel], each 1 liang), Tao Ren (Peach Kernel, peeled and pitted, double-kernelled, raw), Baifuzi (Aconitum Coreanum Rhizome).
Dafangfeng Tang (Great Wind-Expelling Decoction)
Indicated for Crane's Knee Wind. This formula effectively expels wind, regulates qi, harmonizes blood vessels, strengthens sinews and bones, eliminates cold-dampness, and drives out cold qi.
Crane's Knee Wind (also known as Drum-beater Wind, from *Zhizhi Fang* [Directing the Guide]), characterized by thin lower legs like reed stems, with only the knees enlarged; in severe cases, walking is impossible.
Take one dose of Xiao Xuming Tang (Minor Rescue Life Decoction), add Bi Xie (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizome), Chuan Lian Zi (Toosendan Fruit), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), and Gan Mugua (Dried Quince). Coarse powder it. Do not use Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger). Decoct in water. Place a small amount of She Xiang (Musk) at the bottom of the bowl before filtering the dregs. Drink the liquid. After taking dozens of doses, add Wuji San (Five Accumulations Powder) and decoct together. Filter and drink to cure. Another method uses Zi ...
Sisheng Gao (Four Sages Paste)
Indicated for Crane's Knee Wind and various wind disorders.
Chuan Dang Gui (Chinese Angelica Root), Moyao (Myrrh), Da Chuanwu (Large Sichuan Aconite Root) (equal parts). Grind into fine powder. Use 24 non-decayed Zao Jiao (Soap Pod), crush them, decoct in water for several boils, filter the dregs. Boil the liquid in a pot until it becomes a paste. Add the aforementioned medicine powder and stir evenly. Apply to the affected area.
Whenever there are injuries from knives or arrows, needle wounds, moxibustion burns, bone fractures, abscesses, or sores, whether recent trauma or long-standing open sores that have not healed, if one fails to be cautious and is exposed to wind-cold, toxic vapors and wind pathogens invade from the exterior. Initially, they damage the blood vessels; over time, they attack the zang-fu organs. This leads to body stiffness, trismus (lockjaw), tendon contraction, tremors of the four limbs, bone marrow pain, and facial deviation. Such conditions become difficult to save. These are all caused by wind pathogens invading injured areas, hence named "Po Shang Feng" (Wind after Injury). Wind is the beginning of all diseases. If one remains pure and quiet, the couli (pores) close and resist pathogens; even strong wind and severe toxins cannot cause harm. Therefore, Po Shang Feng involves both exterior and interior, distinguishing yin and yang, and its treatment principles are similar to those of Shang Han (Cold Damage). People know about sweating to release the exterior, but do not know about purging the interior and harmonizing. These are the three methods: sweating, purging, and vomiting. When various sores do not heal, due to deficiency of Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi), lack of muscle growth, and failure of wound closure, wind pathogens can also enter the sores from the exterior, becoming signs of Po Shang Feng. Moxibustion on sores, and white scabs forming on wounds, block the pores and prevent qi from venting easily. Thus, yang-heat easily stagnates, and in severe cases, generates wind. Therefore, a floating and weak pulse indicates Taiyang (Greater Yang) syndrome; since it is in the exterior, sweating is appropriate. A long and forceful pulse indicates Yangming (Yang Brightness) syndrome; since it is in the interior, purging is appropriate. A floating, wiry, and small pulse indicates Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) syndrome; half-exterior and half-interior, harmonization is appropriate. If one understands these three methods, it is unheard of for treatment to miss the disease.
