Drains heat, resolves phlegm, and cools to calm convulsions.
Sweet and cool in nature. When a cow is ill, yellowish concretions form between the heart, liver, and gallbladder; thus, it can also treat diseases of these organs (Jingshu states: Cows ingest various herbs, and their essence condenses into yellow, similar to humans cultivating internal elixirs. Therefore, it can dissipate fire, resolve phlegm, and detoxify, making it a divine substance among medicines. Some claim that yellow forms only when cows are sick, which is incorrect). It clears the heart and dissipates heat, resolves phlegm and calms convulsions, opens orifices, and expels evil pathogens. It treats wind-stroke affecting the zang organs, epilepsy with locked jaw (Heart heat generates flames spontaneously; Liver heat generates wind spontaneously. Wind and fire contend, causing sticky phlegm to obstruct upwards, leading to wind-stroke with muteness. Dongyuan says: It is suitable for wind-stroke affecting the zang organs. If used for wind-stroke affecting the fu organs or meridians and vessels, it may instead draw wind into the bones, like oil penetrating into flour. Note: Wind-stroke affecting the zang organs is severe, often obstructing the nine orifices; wind-stroke affecting the fu organs is slightly milder, often affecting the four limbs. If there are no exterior manifestations of the six channels and no internal obstruction of urination or defecation, it is classified as wind-stroke affecting the collaterals, which is even milder. Initially, one should regulate qi and resolve phlegm; subsequently, nourish blood and invigorate blood circulation, avoiding exclusive use of wind-dispelling drugs. Generally, all five zang organs can be affected by wind, but the Liver is most commonly involved. The Liver belongs to wind-wood and governs the sinews. Liver disease fails to nourish the sinews, resulting in symptoms such as stiff tongue, locked jaw, facial deviation, paralysis, inability to move, and numbness. If the mouth is open, it indicates Heart exhaustion; if hands are scattered, Spleen exhaustion; if eyes are closed, Liver exhaustion; if urine is incontinent, Kidney exhaustion; if foaming at the mouth and epistaxis occur, Lung exhaustion; if hair stands erect, head shakes, face is red like makeup, and sweat beads like pearls, these are all untreatable. However, if only one or two symptoms appear, there is still hope for treatment). It treats various pediatric diseases (all caused by fetal toxins and phlegm-heat. When a newborn has not yet taken milk, use three to five fen, mixed with powder of Huanglian and Gancao and honey, and let the infant suckle it, which is effective). It induces abortion and promotes eruption of smallpox/variolae (excels at opening orifices). Cows possessing this concretion will likely bellow frequently. Place a basin of water beneath them; when they vomit it out, urge them immediately so it falls into the water. This is called "raw huang," about the size of an egg yolk, layered and peelable. Those that are light, hollow, and fragrant are superior (Observing this, we see it is not a disease but naturally formed huang). If obtained from a slaughtered cow, those found in the horn are called "horn huang"; those in the heart, "heart huang"; those in the liver and gallbladder, "liver and gallbladder huang." Those formed into lumps or grains are generally inferior to raw huang. To verify authenticity, grind it on a fingernail; if the yellow color penetrates through the nail, it is genuine (Camel huang is easily obtained and can counterfeit genuine huang). It works well with Mudanpi and Changpu (benefits hearing and vision), and Renshen serves as its guide drug. It is incompatible with Longgu, Longdan, Dihuang, and Changshan.
