For diarrhea with undigested food in the stool, exterior-releasing methods should not be used; if sweating occurs due to error, abdominal fullness will inevitably result.
In diarrhea, a deep and string-taut pulse indicates tenesmus (a feeling of incomplete defecation); a large pulse indicates the disease has not ceased; a weak and rapid pulse indicates the disease is about to stop spontaneously. Even if there is fever, death will not occur.
In diarrhea, with a deep and slow pulse, where the patient's face is slightly red, the body has slight heat, and diarrhea with undigested food occurs, there will inevitably be vertigo and dizziness (Yu Mao). The disease will resolve through sweating. The patient will have mild cold extremities. This is because of "Dai Yang" (floating yang on the face) and deficiency-cold in the lower jiao.
In diarrhea, if the pulse is rapid and there is thirst, the disease will heal spontaneously. If it does not improve, pus and blood in the stool will inevitably appear, due to internal heat.
After diarrhea, if the pulse disappears and the hands and feet are cold, but the pulse returns and the hands and feet become warm after a meal's time, the prognosis is good (life); if the pulse does not return, the prognosis is poor (death).
In Shanghan (Cold Damage), if diarrhea occurs more than ten times a day and the pulse is unexpectedly excess-strong, the prognosis is poor (death).

*Shanghan Zabing Lun Volume XII: Differentiation of Huoluan Vomiting and Diarrhea Pulse and Symptoms*
Question: What is Huoluan? Answer: Vomiting and diarrhea together are named Huoluan.
Master says: Huoluan belongs to Taiyin. Huoluan must involve vomiting and diarrhea, but vomiting and diarrhea are not necessarily Huoluan. Huoluan arises from cold and heat mixing chaotically in the middle. Heat qi reversing upward causes vomiting; cold qi sinking downward causes diarrhea. If there is dietary irregularity causing stagnation in the upper/middle, everything goes up causing vomiting, or everything goes down causing diarrhea. This is named Tu Li (Vomiting and Diarrhea), not Huoluan.
Question: What disease involves fever, headache, body ache, aversion to cold, vomiting, and diarrhea?
Answer: This is not Huoluan. Huoluan involves spontaneous vomiting and diarrhea. Now, with aversion to cold, body ache, and additional fever, we know it is not Huoluan.
For Huoluan vomiting and diarrhea without cold/heat signs, with a soggy and weak pulse, Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) is indicated.
