Wang Yifeng's son suffered from malaria. Due to excessive consumption of warming and dispersing herbs like ginger and jujube, he developed high fever, deafness, delirious speech, fecal incontinence, insomnia, confusion, mania, and a desire to bite people when seeing others. Gu treated it as latent summerheat but was ineffective. By early winter, he sought Mengying's consultation. All pulses were slippery. Mengying added acorus, arisaema, bamboo sap, pearl, and bovine calculus to Gu's prescription containing rhinoceros horn. He also administered Baijin Wan (White Gold Pill). Symptoms decreased after one dose, and he recovered completely within ten days. Subsequently, his mother developed fever and frequent vomiting of sticky saliva, severe headache like splitting, bitter taste, deafness, and confused consciousness. Her pulse was wiry and rapid. This was latent summerheat complicated by rampant internal wind. Mengying prescribed rhinoceros horn, scrophularia, bamboo shavings, angelica dahurica powder, anemarrhena, forsythia, poria, dendrobium, gardenia, chrysanthemum, and Xue Geng (Snow Soup). She recovered in seven days. (Prince Wang's formula: Sliced rhinoceros horn boiled first 4 qian. Ginger bamboo shavings 3 qian. Ginger bamboo sap mixed with two large wine cups. Raw winter melon seeds 4 qian. Sichuan fritillaria crushed 8 qian. Southern angelica dahurica powder 5 qian. Heavenly bamboo resin 3 qian. Acorus added later 2 qian. Aged arisaema stewed and taken together 1 qian. Tongue medicine with pearl powder 1 fen. Bovine calculus 3 li. Wang Yifeng's mother's formula: Sliced rhinoceros horn boiled first 4 qian. Scrophularia slices soaked, decocted, dregs removed, mixed 1 liang. Ginger bamboo shavings 3 qian. Southern angelica dahurica powder 4 qian. Wine-stir-fried anemarrhena 4 qian. Forsythia shell 3 qian. Cloud poria 3 qian. Dendrobium boiled first 1 liang. Water chestnut 1 liang. Pale sea cucumber boiled first 2 liang.)
Wangzineng's wife suffered from hematemesis for a long time, which doctors could not cure. Mengying observed a wiry and slippery pulse that beat forcefully against the fingers, more pronounced on the right hand. She was thirsty and craved cold drinks. Food felt obstructed when swallowing. Urine bubbled like boiling water. She could not sleep at night. Long-term use of yin-nourishing herbs yielded no effect. Mengying administered a large dose of Weijing Tang (Reed Shoot Decoction) combined with Xue Geng (Snow Soup), plus gypsum, anemarrhena, angelica dahurica powder, loquat leaf, bamboo shavings, inula flower, alumen, and pear juice. After thirty doses, she recovered. (The six sentences describing the wiry, slippery, and forceful pulse indicate phlegm-heat obstructing the lung. Long-term yin nourishment treats the kidney for a lung disease, hence ineffectiveness. Fresh reed shoot 2 liang. Raw winter melon seeds 8 qian. Whole water chestnut 2 liang. Pale sea cucumber boiled first 1 liang. Raw gypsum boiled first 1 liang 6 qian. Strong wine-stir-fried anemarrhena 4 qian. Ginger angelica dahurica powder 5 qian. Ginger loquat leaf 3 qian. Ginger bamboo shavings 3 qian. Inula flower wrapped, boiled first 3 qian. Western alumen wrapped, boiled first 4 qian. Raw pear 1 liang, juice extracted and mixed.)
Mother of Yu Langzhai suffered from latent summerheat in autumn. Mengying had already cured her, but due to lack of proper care, she relapsed with qi rushing upward, spontaneous sweating, cold limbs, and poor appetite. Attacks and tonification were not applied correctly. Mengying was invited again. He used methods to fill Chong and Ren vessels, clear latent phlegm, combined with Ganmai Dazao Tang (Licorice, Wheat, and Jujube Decoction) to nourish blood, leading to recovery. (This illness is residual summerheat exploiting liver deficiency and phlegm excess, stirring up liver yang. Antelope horn tip boiled first 8 qian 4 li. Acorus and processed pinellia added later 1 qian each. Large rehmannia soaked and decocted, dregs removed 8 qian. Jin Yin Hua (Lonicera) 1 liang 5 qian. Dendrobium boiled first 1 liang. Melia seed crushed, boiled first 3 qian. Wine-stir-fried anemarrhena 3 qian. Sichuan fritillaria crushed 1 liang. Pear juice ground with sterculia lychnophora 6 fen taken together. Once turbid phlegm is cleared, remove antelope horn, acorus, and sterculia; add raw licorice 3 qian, northern wheat 4 qian, boxed angelica root 2 qian. Mengying's prescription logic does not stick rigidly to formulas; jujube is warm and cloying, thus unsuitable here.)
Brother of Gao Ruisheng suffered from prolonged malaria without recovery. He was emaciated and refused food. Doctors diagnosed deficiency and administered tonics, which increased spontaneous sweating. Mengying palpated a wiry and slippery pulse and qi accumulation below the epigastrium. He administered Xiaoxianxiong Tang (Small Trap in the Chest Decoction) with added bamboo shavings, inula flower, and sterculia to resolve phlegm knots. Gradually, he could eat. Follow-up treatment with clearing and nourishing methods led to full recovery and muscle gain. (Ginger-processed coptis 2 qian. Ginger trichosanthes seed 3 qian. Processed pinellia ground, added later 2 qian. Ginger bamboo shavings 3 qian. Inula flower wrapped, boiled first 1.5 qian. Stir-fried sterculia 1.5 qian. Clearing and nourishing formula: Sichuan fritillaria crushed 4 qian. Inula flower wrapped, boiled first 1.5 qian. Southern angelica dahurica powder 3 qian. Raw licorice 1 qian. Northern codonopsis 4 qian. Bitter apricot kernel 2 qian. Dendrobium boiled first 5 qian. Stir-fried sterculia 1 qian.)
Li Gui suffered from a common cold for several days and suddenly fainted. Mengying saw his grayish-dark complexion, eyes rolled back, and mouth open. His pulse was still present. He administered a decoction of acorus, arisaema, bamboo shavings, and inula flower, mixed with child's urine, and灌 (instilled) Niuhuang Zhibao Dan (Cattle Gallstone Treasure Precious Pill). He recovered immediately. (Acorus added later 2 qian. Aged arisaema stewed and taken together 1 qian. Ginger bamboo shavings 3 qian. Inula flower wrapped, boiled first 3 qian. Heavenly bamboo resin 3 qian. Ginger-stir-fried coptis 1 qian. Clean citrus reticulata network 5 fen. Mix in one wine cup of child's urine, removing head and tail. Grind western cattle gallstone 2 li. Zhibao Dan 5 fen. This illness is caused by phlegm obstruction. First use bitter, pungent, and aromatic herbs to open the phlegm.)
Wu Yunxiang started with a cold in mid-spring. By late summer and early autumn, he had excessive phlegm and rebellious qi, with muscle wasting. By early winter, various symptoms arose: tinnitus, lower back pain, rising fire when lying down, fighting dreams, aversion to cold, and irritability. Many doctors advocated tonifying deficiency, but with no effect. Mengying palpated a wiry and fine pulse, with the left cun and right chi being very rapid. The right cun and guan were urgent and irregular. The patient's neck hung down and could not lift. Breathing was short and difficult to speak. The tongue was dark without coating. The face was sallow and there was no thirst. Mengying said: Although the illness started from labor injury complicated by external pathogens, it has lasted a year. Tracing its origin, he usually drank heavily, aiming for intoxication every time for thirty years. Not only were external pathogens not cleared, but deep-seated internal accumulated heat was also exacerbated by indiscriminate use of warming tonics. Ying and jin fluids were scorched, muscles wasted, and phlegm increased. Ascending and descending functions were abnormal, fire floated while feet were cold. The pathology was complex, making recovery difficult. Tentatively treating according to meridians, he used gypsum, anemarrhena, angelica dahurica powder, and scutellaria to clear lungs and wash away phlegm. Qinghao (Artemisia annua), biejia (Softshell Turtle Shell), gardenia, and juling (Melia azedarach) to soften liver and drain heat. Scrophularia, ligustrum, asparagus tuber, and phellodendron to nourish water and control fire. Bamboo shavings, inula flower, loquat leaf, and tangerine peel to ventilate middle and descend qi. The prescription varied, occasionally assisting with Longhui Wan (Dragon Liver Pill) to directly drain alcohol toxicity from the gallbladder meridian, and Zixue Dan (Purple Snow Pill) to search out lingering pathogens in collaterals. After three doses, yellow coating appeared on the tongue, and accumulated heat began to dissipate. After six doses, cough decreased, hunger returned, and he craved hot drinks. Latent phlegm gradually transformed. After ten doses, aversion to cold ceased, and feet became warm. Lung qi descended. Dreams became clear, and night sleep improved. American ginseng, rehmannia, and ophiopogon were added to replenish fluids. Lonicera, mung bean, and Xue Geng (Snow Soup) resolved accumulations. Muscles gradually filled, and dark complexion faded. (Rapid left cun and right chi indicate heart and kidney yin deficiency with blazing fire. Urgent and irregular right cun and guan indicate lung and stomach heat blazing, stirring phlegm rebellion. Neck hanging down and other four sentences are signs of warming tonics exacerbating phlegm-heat and obstructing qi mechanism. Treatment must first clear lung and stomach. Raw gypsum boiled first 8 qian. Wine-stir-fried anemarrhena 4 qian. Ginger angelica dahurica powder 4 qian. Ginger gardenia peel 3 qian. Ginger bamboo shavings 3 qian. Inula flower wrapped, boiled first 3 qian. Ginger loquat leaf wrapped 3 qian. Lai's tangerine peel added later 1 qian. Medicine sent with Zixue Dan 1 fen. After three postures, remove anemarrhena. Add wine-stir-fried scutellaria 1.5 qian. Wine-stir-fried melia seed crushed, boiled first 3 qian. Fresh Qinghao added later 1.5 qian. Medicine sent with Danggui Longhui Wan 2 qian. After another three postures, remove Zixue Dan, gypsum, bamboo shavings, loquat leaf, angelica dahurica powder, gardenia peel, scutellaria, and Longhui Wan. Add wine-stir-fried phellodendron 1.5 qian. Whole water chestnut 2 liang. Pale sea cucumber boiled first 1 liang. Blood softshell turtle shell crushed, boiled first 8 qian 1 liang. Ligustrum crushed 5 qian. Scrophularia slices 8 qian. Tian Dong (Asparagus Tuber) sliced 6 qian. Two ingredients soaked, decocted, dregs removed. After six postures, remove water chestnut and sea cucumber. Add American ginseng 3 qian. Large rehmannia 8 qian. Flower ophiopogon 4 qian. Two ingredients soaked and decocted together. Mung bean 1 liang. Jin Yin Hua (Lonicera) 8 qian.)
Yang Suyuan was proficient in medicine. His wife suffered from multiple illnesses that self-treatment could not cure. Mengying drafted a prescription and case record based on the letter describing symptoms: Carefully reviewing the etiology, the condition persisted for over twenty years. It began with eating apricots; raw and cold damaged stomach yang. Liver wood exploited the deficiency, causing hypochondriac pain and spasms. His body was naturally robust, dampness was abundant turning into phlegm. Warming herbs seemed to match dampness but contradicted phlegm. Gradually, accumulated warmth turned into heat, further aiding wind-yang, consuming stomach jin fluids, and causing emaciation. Phlegm and fluid retention are originally the fierce qi of food and drink. Liver ascending was excessive, stomach descending lacked authority. They created a new nest, occupying a strategic height. Initially, qi stagnation stopped fluid retention. Subsequently, fluid coiling obstructed qi. Once qi was obstructed, blood also deviated from its course, accumulating into blood stasis. Previous treatments with Shenzhu Wan and Kongyan Dan to wash away fluid, Danshen Yin and Taohé Chengqi Tang to expel blood stasis, were approximately correct. However, as deficiency extended over time, even the qi stagnation and excess would become scattered and uncontrollable. Thus, qi rises and fire floats, causing red cheeks and swollen face. When qi descends and fire subsides, yellow thinness increases daily. If emotions are displeased, the illness will flare up suddenly. Since liver is a rigid organ, associated with anger, and blood fails to nourish, its nature becomes more expansive. Stomach earth belongs to yang, suitable for unblocking and descending. Unblocking means no pain. Six fu organs function through unblocking. Smooth bowel movements bring comfort, which is a sign. Although the body is deficient, the illness is excess. Deficiency lies in stomach fluids; excess lies in liver yang. Middle deficiency originally desires food intake, but liver rebellion and roundworm disturbance cause vomiting. The vomited water shows black color. Turbid yin at the stomach bottom, stirred by wind, creates waves, overturning upwards. It is difficult to attack further. Pulse at both guan feels drum-like when moderately pressed, but disappears with heavy pressure. How can this be a minor matter? During spring, when eagles fly and fish leap, I pondered deeply. Considering strategies to reinforce earth, I formulated the following prescription: Codonopsis (8 qian) Fresh bamboo shavings (4 qian) Sichuan pepper red (2 fen) Charred sour plum meat (6 fen) Poria (3 qian) Inula flower (3 qian) Melia azedarach flesh (2 qian) Persimmon calyx (10 pieces) Immortal pinellia (1 qian) Pale cistanche (1.5 qian) Evodia soup-stir-fried coptis (4 fen) Cordyceps sinensis (1.5 qian) Additionally, calcined tortoise shell and lotus root 4 liang each. Bleached aged sea cucumber 2 liang. Fuzi (Water Chestnut) 1 liang. Hematite 4 qian. Boil clear soup first to replace water for decocting herbs. (Condition summary: Warming tonics aided liver, harming stomach. Poria and pinellia slightly protect stomach yang. Tortoise shell, lotus root, and Xue Geng nourish stomach fluids. Soften and restrain liver yang. Plum, melia, and coptis sour-bitter drain liver. Persimmon calyx and codonopsis sweet-cool benefit stomach. Bamboo shavings and inula flower wash away phlegm and descend qi. Cistanche benefits yang and pairs with yin. Hematite heavy medicine used lightly. Sichuan pepper counter-assist. Slight bitter-cold dosage. Cordyceps guides ascending-descending changes.) Ten days later, he visited again for follow-up. Case record says: Condition exceeds twenty years. Qi gathers in right hypochondrium, ascending without descending. Fluid obstruction not disseminated. Vomiting and rebellion reduce appetite for half a year. Bowel and bladder movements require purgatives to flow. Complexion changes frequently. Bitter vomiting and acid swallowing. Yellow tongue coating and crimson tongue. Craves cold drinks. Remaining eight ingredients are all clearing and washing qi-moving products. Sea stone heavy medicine used lightly. Green onion roots slightly assist pungent unblocking.)

Zhou Senbo suffered from fever, red face, thirst, and slight sweating. Mengying viewed it and said: This is spring-warmth. Taking advantage of initial invasion, pathogen is still in lung. Hence right cun pulse is flooding and large. Should let it descend and exit via fu organs. Can be miraculously cured.
