After sweating for Taiyang cold damage disease, the exterior syndrome remains unresolved, accompanied by dry cough, vomiting and rebellious qi, and inability to sleep at night. Following the ancient method of Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction).

The lower jiao's yin and yang have been deficient since early days. Running in snow allows cold to enter through the mouth and nose. When the Lung is affected by pathogenic factors, it rebels upward causing asthma; when Yang is injured, sweat occurs. Since the pathogen entered from the middle jiao, dispersing the exterior is of no benefit; ventilating the rebellious Qi of the Lung can relieve asthma and save the patient.
Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Bai Shao (White Peony Root), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Fruit), Fu Ling (Poria)

After fatigue encountering cold, Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi become obstructed. For a deficient person with mixed pathogens, only light agents for dispersion are suitable.
Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig), Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Bai Shao (White Peony Root), Da Zao (Jujube), Fu Ling (Poria)

Vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, dry tongue without desire to drink, pulse weak on the left and large on the right. Cold contracted during fatigue and overwork, with rejection in the epigastrium, are all manifestations of Taiyin disease. The ancients used Wu Ji San (Five Accumulations Powder) made from raw or cooked ingredients; therefore, borrowing its intent, awaiting your discretion.
Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Cao Guo Ren (Tsaoko Cardamom Seed), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber), Hou Po (Magnolia Bark), Guang Pi (Tangerine Peel), Wei Jiang (Baked Ginger)

Inhaling cold air constitutes Cold striking the Taiyin directly. This can be cross-referenced with Huoluan (Cholera-like disorder). Zhengqi San (Upright Qi Powder) and Lengxiang Yinzi (Cold Fragrance Drink) effectively dispel filth and restore Yang. However, Spleen and Stomach Yang Qi has not fully recovered; it is proposed to use Zhizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) for several doses, clarifying deficiency at night is excellent.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Sheng Yi Zhi Ren (Raw Yizhi Seed), Sha Ren (Amomum Fruit), Wei Jiang (Baked Ginger), Guang Pi (Tangerine Peel), Fu Ling Pi (Poria Peel), Mu Gua (Chaenomeles Fruit)

Sudden cold enters via mouth and nose, directly attacking Taiyin, causing upper vomiting and lower diarrhea with abdominal pain. This is a Zhonghan (Middle Cold) Yin syndrome. The pulse is fine, choppy, and nearly imperceptible; urgently warming the middle and lower jiao is required.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Dan Gan Jiang (Mild Dried Ginger), Sheng Bai Shao (Raw White Peony Root), Jiao Zhu (Charred Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Dan Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root), Fu Ling (Poria)

Due to fullness and stuffiness in the epigastrium, remove Zhu (Atractylodes) for its moderating effect, and add Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig) to regulate Yang.

In advanced age, Kidney Water is deficient. Warm pathogens penetrate deeply into the Yin aspect. Heat resides internally while the exterior appears cold. Heat injuring Yin causes painful urination; these are all characteristics of Dongwen (Winter Warmth). Zhang Zhongjing emphasized preserving Yin as the main principle. Why do medicines use Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Fu Zi (Aconite Lateral Root), pungent and hot, to further deplete fluids? What is the reasoning?
Sheng Di (Rehmannia Root), E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Chao Ma Ren (Fired Hemp Seed), Sheng Bai Shao (Raw White Peony Root)

Warm pathogens cause water deficiency and heat invasion. Pulse is fine and rapid, thirst, crimson tongue, lack of hunger, dry and cracked skin. Heat depletes body fluids; preserving Yin must be prioritized. Bitter-cold herbs should not be used as they may transform into heat.
Mai Wei Di Huang Wan / Fu Mai Tang (Decoction to Restore the Pulse).

Dry tongue without desire to drink, borborygmus, and diarrhea indicate that Yin fluids refuse to ascend, also presenting as withering. Zhang Zhongjing often used Fu Mai Tang (Decoction to Restore the Pulse) to raise fluids in cases of little pathogen and much deficiency.
Fu Mai Tang (Decoction to Restore the Pulse) minus Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Ma Ren (Hemp Seed), mixed with one cup of fresh sugarcane juice.

Kidney deficiency with internal penetration of warm pathogens leads to emaciation of form and spirit, insomnia, anorexia, evening chills and fever, resolving with sweat. It is proposed to use Fu Mai Tang (Decoction to Restore the Pulse) minus Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) plus Bai Shao (White Peony Root).

Pulse beats strongly on the left and is fine on the right; malar flush and asthma. After defecation last night, sweating occurred, leading to restlessness all night. Winter warmth latent heat presents as Yin decline and Yang floating. Most critical attention is needed.
Sheng Di Tan (Charred Rehmannia Root), Chao Mai Dong (Fired Ophiopogon Tuber), Zhe Zhi (Sugarcane Juice), Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), Sheng Bai Shao (Raw White Peony Root)

Kidney deficiency with internal penetration of warm pathogens, heat forcing fluid injury. Tongue coating white, no hunger, no desire to eat. Following Zhang Zhongjing's example of little pathogen and much deficiency, using sweet substances with Fu Mai Tang (Decoction to Restore the Pulse).
Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), Mai Dong Rou (Ophiopogon Flesh), Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Da Ma Ren (Large Hemp Seed), Sheng Di (Rehmannia Root)

Winter warmth with water deficiency, excessive heat in the Upper Jiao.
Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) minus Yu Rou (Cornus Fruit), adding Sheng Bai Shao (Raw White Peony Root), Ji Zi Huang (Egg Yolk), Xiao Mai (Wheat).

Evening fever from warm pathogens results from Yin deficiency and Yang floating. Fever resolves without sweat, no desire to drink water; is this a Yang meridian disease? Winter loss of storage capacity dictates treatment from Liver and Kidney perspectives.

Complexion fades, pulse becomes gradually fine, no hunger, no desire to eat, touch reveals no heat though patient claims heat, no thirst, occasional chills. This indicates weak Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi; treat the Middle Jiao.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Pao Gan Jiang (Roasted Dried Ginger), Yi Zhi Ren (Yizhi Seed), Fu Ling (Poria), Mu Gua (Chaenomeles Fruit), Sheng Bai Shao (Raw White Peony Root)

Right-side lying worsens chest oppression; Yangming Qi has not fully descended. Tonify Earth and direct rebellion downward is appropriate.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Bai Xuan Fu Hua (White Inula Flower), Sheng Bai Shao (Raw White Peony Root), Fu Ling (Poria), Dai Zhe Shi (Haematitum), Nan Zao Rou (Jujube Flesh)

Left-sided pulsation indicates Yin deficiency. With deep penetration of warm pathogens, using purely bitter and descending herbs risks drying and depleting Yin fluids. Propose using sweet, salty, and cold substances.
Xian Sheng Di (Fresh Rehmannia Root), Zhu Ye Xin (Bamboo Leaf Heart), Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Licorice Root), Yuan Shen Xin (Scrophularia Root Heart), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber)

Asthma with phlegm rattle, nostrils blackened. Warm pathogens enter from above, Kidney Essence depletes below. Yin cannot connect with Yang, consciousness becomes increasingly confused; these are signs of collapse. Given the scattered and disorganized right pulse, malar flush at dusk, although Shaoyin is exhausted, follow He Jian's method: clear the Upper Jiao again and nourish the source of transformation.
Shu Di Tan (Charred Prepared Rehmannia Root), Dan Cong Rong (Cistanche Stem), Bai Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Niu Xi Tan (Charred Achyranthes Root), Tian Men Dong (Asparagus Tuber), Shi Chang Pu (Acorus Rhizome)

After fourteen days of warm pathogens, tongue is crimson with thirst, face oily. This indicates water deficiency and heat entering the Ying (Nutritive) level; coma and syncope must be guarded against. Clear pathogens in the blood.
Xian Sheng Di (Fresh Rehmannia Root), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Sheng Bai Shao (Raw White Peony Root), Zhu Ye Xin (Bamboo Leaf Heart), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex)

Winter warmth, Qi-heat penetrates deeply into Shaoyin. Tongue red, heart yellow, tidal fever without thirst. The main principle is to preserve Yin, preventing confusion.
Xian Sheng Di (Fresh Rehmannia Root), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Sheng Bai Shao (Raw White Peony Root), Zhu Ye Xin (Bamboo Leaf Heart), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex)

Winter warmth, rapid pulse, red tongue, thirst worse in evening, water deficiency with heat invading Yin aspects.

Warm pathogens enter the Lung, upper lip swells. Initially, disease is in the Qi level; treat with light bitter-pungent-cold agents. Do not affect the Middle and Lower Jiao.
Bo He (Mint Herb), Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Niu Bang (Arctium Fruit), Hei Zhi Pi (Black Gardenia Peel), Sheng Shi Gao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum)

Warm pathogens enter from above, Lung Qi and Spleen obstruction cause severe whole-body skin pain, profuse sweating, inability to sit or lie down, thirst with desire to drink, incessant dry retching. Previously, warm pathogens transformed into heat. Following the example of Ying-Wei pathogen stagnation, use Zhang Zhongjing's Yue Bi Tang (Yue Bi Decoction) method.
Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Gui Zhi Mu (Cinnamon Twig Wood), Fu Ling (Poria), Chao Ban Xia (Fired Pinellia Tuber), Sheng Shi Gao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum)

Cun (Inch) position pulses, rebellious cough, bone pain worse in evening. Warm pathogens enter Lung, Ying-Wei disharmony. Clear heat from Qi level, assist in unblocking Ying level.
Gui Zhi Bai Hu Tang (Cinnamon Twig and White Tiger Decoction)

Winter warmth heat penetrates, scorching sinews and bones. This differs from wind-cold attacking sinews/bones which requires sweating. Generate fluids and clear heat; warm pathogens will resolve spontaneously.
Gui Zhi Mu (Cinnamon Twig Wood), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Hua Fen (Trichosanthes Root), Hua Shi (Talcum), Gan Cao (Licorice Root)

Winter warmth latent pathogen, first cold extremities then fever. Deep heat emerges from interior, sweating with irritability. Rescue Stomach fluids.
Zhu Ye Xin (Bamboo Leaf Heart), Wu Mei Rou (Mume Fruit Flesh), Chuan Shi Hu (Dendrobium Stem), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Licorice Root), Sheng Gu Ya (Raw Sprouted Grain).

Visceral Truth is deficient below, Yang floats upward with rebellion. Stomach intake is low, no hunger, swollen gum roots, numbness at vertex. Prone to depression, sudden warm tonification is difficult. Moreover, winter warmth is a time when storage is weak and heat easily enters. Tentatively prescribe light salty-bitter agents to soften knots and regulate ascending/descending. Allow Jueyin and Yangming to harmonize slightly, discuss adjustments later.
Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Chuan Shi Hu (Dendrobium Stem), Gua Lou Pi (Trichosanthes Peel), Mu Li (Oyster Shell), Mu Gua (Chaenomeles Fruit), Shan Zha (Hawthorn Fruit)

Yin-deficient constitution, compounded by labor and running, injures Yang. Red tongue edges, yellow center, dry throat, distended abdomen. Heat inside, pulse Qi knotted, Stomach fails to descend. Advance with resolving depression and clearing dryness.
Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Chao Huang Zhu Ru (Fired Bamboo Shavings), Gua Lou Ren (Trichosanthes Seed), Zi Wan (Aster Root), Jin Shi Hu (Dendrobium Stem), Guang Pi Bai (Tangerine Peel White)

Excessive belching releases Qi, losing the function of Winter storage. Post-illness fatigue, cough with blood, advanced age with excess above and deficiency below, similar to winter warmth external pathogen. No rationale for pungent dispersion. Sweet-cool moistening agents are suitable to avoid harming the Stomach.
Sang Ye (Mulberry Leaf), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Hei Zhi (Black Gardenia Fruit), Yu Zhu (Polygonatum Rhizome), Bai Sha Shen (Glehnia Root), Xiang Bei (Fritillaria Thunbergii Bulb)

Winter warmth disease arises because righteous Qi cannot secure storage, heat erupts from within. Dry gums, tongue, lips, reddening eyes, oily face, slurred speech, breathing resembling asthma. Pathogen lies hidden in Shaoyin, disease manifests affecting all three Jiao. Zhang Zhongjing stated: "Fever with thirst is Warm Disease," clearly instructing later generations: exterior cold constraint causes no thirst, internal heat eruption必然 causes thirst. Treatment method focuses on clearing heat and preserving Yin, preventing pathogens from burning and depleting fluids, leading to convulsions, spasm, syncope, delirium, etc. Thus Zhang Zhongjing reiterated treatment principles: if one mistake prolongs the illness, two mistakes hasten death. Sweating and purging are contraindicated, as are warm needle therapies. If unresolved after nine days, propose clearing heat above the diaphragm.
