Sweating during sleep (Dao Han) is primarily treated with Huangqin Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction - *Note: Text says Huangqin Tang, usually refers to Scutellaria Decoction*): Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) 3 qian, Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) 2 qian, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 5 fen, Jujube (Ziziphi Fructus) 2 pieces, decocted and taken orally. If vomiting occurs, remove the Jujube and add Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) to direct rebellious Qi downward.
This formula originally treats spontaneous diarrhea resulting from a combined disease of the Taiyang and Shaoyang channels, and also treats various types of hemorrhage. The Classics state: For conditions that are deficient and not solid, use bitter substances to firm them, and sour substances to astringe them. Therefore, the bitter and sour properties of Huangqin and Shaoyao are used to firm and astringe the Qi of the intestines and stomach; for conditions that are weak and insufficient, sweet substances are used to tonify them. The sweetness of Gancao and Dazao (Jujube) is used to tonify and secure the weakness of the intestines and stomach. Honey Suppository Method: Use half a zhan of white honey, simmer gently in a copper spoon until it does not disperse when dropped in water, add 2 qian of Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Spina) powder, mix evenly, shape into small dates about one cun long with pointed ends, dip in sesame oil, and insert into the anus. Bowel movement will occur urgently and pass. If there is no relief, replace with another one. Cover the anus with cloth externally, hold the honey inside, and only release the cloth when feces arrive. This treats Yangming channel spontaneous sweating and frequent urination; purgation is contraindicated.
Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) plus Gualou (Trichosanthis Radix), for vomiting, thirst, and irritability after sweating;
This is Xiaochaihu Tang minus Banxia, with doubled Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), plus Gualougen (Trichosanthis Radix).
Dachaihu Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction) minus Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), for vomiting and spontaneous diarrhea after sweating.
This is Dachaihu Tang minus Dahuang.
Heat after purgation is cleared by Tingli Kujiu Tang (Descurainiae Semen Acetum Decoction);
Sheng Ai (Artemisiae Argyi Herba) 1 he. If fresh Artemisia is unavailable, soak dried Artemisia in water, crush, and extract juice. Tingli (Descurainiae Semen) 5 qian, Kujiu (Vinegar) 5 he. Decoct to 3 he, divide into three doses. This treats Yin-blood injury after severe purgation, with a choppy pulse and unremitting fever. It also treats mania, irritability, red face, and sore throat.
Chills after purgation are supplemented by Shaoyao Fuzi Tang (Paeonia and Aconite Decoction) to nourish marrow.
Shaoyao Fuzi Gancao Tang: Each of the three herbs 3 qian, decocted in water and taken warm. The rationale is that after sweating and purgation in Cold Damage, recovery should occur; if chills persist, it indicates damage to Ying (Nutritive) Qi due to excessive purgation. Or if the patient picks at empty air or suffers deafness, it indicates loss of Yang Qi due to excessive sweating. Thus, the sour property of Shaoyao is used to astringe fluids and benefit Ying; the acrid-hot property of Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) secures Yang Qi and tonifies the Stomach; Gancao harmonizes the acrid and sour to stabilize Zheng Qi (Upright Qi).
Wind-heat cough is eliminated by Jinfeicao San (Golden Fern Herb Powder);
Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos) 4 fen, Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba) 8 fen, Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) and Qianhu (Peucedani Radix) each 6 fen, Gancao, Chishao (Red Paeonia Root), and Banxia each 2 fen, 3 slices of Shengjiang, 1 Jujube. Decoct in water. Filter through fine silk to prevent hairs from irritating the lungs, causing persistent cough. This treats Lung invasion by wind-cold, stiffness and tension of the neck, limb pain, alternating chills and fever, dizziness and headache, heavy cough, thick sticky sputum, chest oppression, fullness, and wheezing, as well as epidemic cold diseases with high fever and aversion to wind. It also treats all wind-heat conditions, phlegm-wind congestion, and difficult expectoration. For various wind syndromes and large bowel wind constipation, left hypochondriac stabbing pain, add Zhike (Aurantii Fructus). For wind-heat organ irritability, Qi stagnation abdominal pain, and constipation, add Xiaoshi (Natrii Sulfas), Dahuang, and Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba). For pregnant women with Cold Damage, headache, high fever, and irritability, add Renshen, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Huangqin, and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum). For hot cough, add Tingli, Doulou (Stemonae Radix), Bohe, Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex), and Wumei (Mume Fructus). For dry throat, add Poxiao (Natrii Sulfas). For toothache, use concentrated decoction for gargling.
Body pain after sweating is primarily treated with Guizhi Jiaren Shen Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction Plus Ginseng);
Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Shaoyao each 3 qian, Renshen 2 qian, Gancao 1 qian, 3 slices of Shengjiang, 2 Jujubes. Decoct in water and take warm. This treats body pain with a deep pulse after sweating or after Huoluan (Colic and Vomiting/Diarrhea syndrome).
Heinu Wan (Black Slave Pill), dosage doubled for extreme thirst;
Huangqin, Fudimei (Soot from Pot Bottom), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Zaotu Mo (Soot from Chimney Flue), Liangshang Chen (Dust from Beams), Xiaomai Nu (Wheat Sprouts), Mahuang, Dahuang each equal parts, powdered, formed into pills the size of bullet seeds with honey. One pill dissolved in newly drawn water. Chills and sweating should occur shortly, leading to recovery. If no sweat, administer again; mild diarrhea should be observed. Do not use lightly if there is no extreme thirst. This treats Yang Du (Yang Toxin) with macules, extreme irritability and thirst exceeding normal levels, and a surging, rapid, full pulse.
Zhuling Tang (Polyporus Decoction), for vomiting after thirst that does not stop.
Fu Yu (Oppression) after sweating/purgation with Stomach deficiency is treated with Guizhi Shenling Tang (Cinnamon Twig, Ginseng, and Polyporus Decoction);
Guizhi Shenling Tang: Guizhi, Shaoyao each 3 qian, Renshen, Fuling (Poria) each 2 qian, Gancao 1 qian, decocted with Shengjiang and Jujube and taken warm. This treats hiccups (Yue) and flushed face due to Fu Yu after sweating, vomiting, and purgation, resulting in Stomach deficiency.
Dai Yang (Floating Yang) with Yin fire causing irritability and stuffiness is treated with Yiyuan Fuzi Gancao Tang (Benefit Origin, Aconite, and Licorice Decoction).
Tao Shi Yiyuan Tang: Gancao 2 qian, Fuzi, Pao Ganjiang (Prepared Dried Ginger) each 1 qian, Renshen 1 qian, Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) 20 grains, Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) each 7 fen, Ai Ye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) 3 fen, Congbai (Allii Cepae Bulbus) 3 stalks, Shengjiang 1 slice, Jujube 2 pieces. Decoct in water. Add Tongbian (Child's Urine) 3 spoons near completion, drink cold in one dose. This treats absence of headache but presence of body heat, irritability, flushed face, inability to swallow water. This is Qi deficiency with rootless floating fire, named Dai Yang Syndrome. Thus, the salty property of Fuzi tonifies Kidney; the acrid property of Jiang and Cong moistens Kidney; the sweet property of Gancao, Renshen, and Maimendong moderates; the sour property of Wuweizi astringes; the bitter property of Huanglian, Ai Ye, and Zhimu disperses. The Classics state: When Fire overflows internally, treat with salty-cold, assist with bitter-acrid, moderate with sweet, astringe with sour, and disperse/descend with bitter. This is the principle.
Mahuang Shengma Tang (Ephedra and Ligusticum Decoction), effective for blindness and epistaxis;
Mahuang, Shengma (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Shaoyao, Huangqin, Shigao, Fuling, Gancao each equal parts. Decoct with Shengjiang, take warm to induce slight sweating. This treats Taiyang disease in Cold Damage that has not resolved, where blood follows congested Qi, causing epistaxis, commonly called "red sweat." Another prescription adds Guizhi, Guiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Tianmendong (Asparagi Radix), Zhimu, Weirui (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma), Baizhu, Ganjiang (Dried Ginger). This treats Cold Damage after six or seven days, pathogen transmitting to Jueyin, after severe purgation: Cun pulse deep and slow, Chi pulse absent, throat obstruction, spitting pus and blood, cold limbs, and unceasing diarrhea—difficult to treat. The rationale is to use cold to counter great heat, and sweating to disperse intense heat. Thus, the sweet property of Mahuang and Shengma disperses floating heat; the acrid property of Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Guizhi, and Jiang dissipates cold; the bitter property of Zhimu and Huangqin cools Heart and removes heat; the sweet property of Fuling and Baizhu moderates Spleen and generates fluids; the sour property of Shaoyao astringes rebellious Qi; the sweet property of Weirui, Mendong, Shigao, and Gancao moistens Lung and removes heat.
Shengyang Sanhuo (Raise Yang and Disperse Fire), placing hands over the heart is a precious method.
Tao Shi Shengyang Sanhuo Tang: Renshen, Danggui, Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Shaoyao, Huangqin, Gancao, Baizhu, Maimendong, Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood) each equal parts, 3 slices of Shengjiang, 1 Jujube. Decoct together with cooked gold and take. This treats "picking at empty air" syndrome. This is Liver heat invading Lung, Yuan Qi (Original Qi) deficiency failing to govern, leading to delirium, unconsciousness, and loss of consciousness. If urination flows, it is treatable; if not, death ensues. If phlegm is present, add Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice) and Banxia; if dry stool, delirium, and thirst, add Dahuang; if leakage, add Shengma and Chao Baizhu (Fried Atractylodes).
Chaihu, Shaoyao, Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange), and Gancao: Why worry about Heat Jue (Reversal) resembling Yin?
Sini San (Counterflow Powder): Gancao, Zhishi, Chaihu, Shaoyao each 1 qian, powdered. Take 2 qian with rice water. The rationale is that as pathogen enters deeper, limbs gradually become cold. Thus, the bitter property of Zhishi assists Gancao to drain interior heat; the sour property of Shaoyao astrings Yin Qi; the bitter property of Chaihu releases exterior heat. The Classics state: When Heat overflows internally, astringe with sour and disperse with bitter. If coughing, it is Lung cold with rebellious Qi; if dysentery, Lung and Large Intestine are exterior-interior pairs, add Wuweizi to astringe rebellious Qi and Ganjiang to disperse Lung cold. If palpitations, it is Qi deficiency failing to circulate, with palpable pulsation in the chest, add Guizhi to guide Yang Qi. If urination is difficult, add Fuling to promote diuresis. If interior deficiency abdominal pain, add Fuzi to tonify deficiency. If tenesmus after diarrhea, it is Lower Jiao Qi stagnation, add Jiubai (Leek White) to move stagnation. Any Kidney disease with internal heat can take this.
Qingbu (Blue Cloth) and Shengjiang can wash cracked and withered tongue coating.
Tongue Washing Method: For white and slippery coating, wipe with Shengjiang dipped in honey. For yellow-red, dry, and rough coating, wrap finger in true blue cloth, dip in cold water, and wipe frequently. Mild heat causes easy shedding of coating; severe cases require purgation to restore fluids and shed coating. If after purgation, lips and mouth remain extremely dry, body has high fever, coating remains bound or turns black, death occurs.
Dry mouth with internal fluid depletion and Fire requires Ziyin Yangrong Tang (Nourish Yin and Benefit Nutritive Decoction);
Ziyin Yangrong Tang: Danggui 2 qian, Renshen, Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) each 1.5 qian, Maimendong, Shaoyao, Zhimu, Huangbo (Phellodendri Cortex) each 1 qian, Wuweizi 14 grains, Gancao 4 fen. Decoct in water and take warm. This treats excessive sweating/purgation leading to internal fluid depletion, or post-illness Water deficiency with Fire flaming up, causing dry mouth and throat.
Wheezing and abdominal fullness belong to Yin; transform Phlegm and generate Pulse.
After sweating/purgation, Qi deficiency with Phlegm congestion is treated with Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) plus Jiangzhi and Zhuli (Bambusa Caulis in Sterilization). Suitable for all wheezing with much phlegm. For Qi deficiency, Jiawei Shengmai San (Modified Generate Pulse Powder): Wuweizi 3 qian, Renshen, Maimendong, Xingren (Pruni Armeniaci Semen), Chenpi each 2 qian, 5 slices of Shengjiang, 2 Jujubes. Decoct in water and take warm. Treats cold limbs, hidden pulse, and急促 wheezing (critical condition, use temporarily to save). For severe Qi deficiency, Dan Renshen Tang (Single Ginseng Decoction): Renshen 5 qian, or 1 liang for severe cases. Decoct 1.5 zhan water to 0.5 zhan and take. Recovery if wheezing stops; death if not. If Blood deficiency, add Danggui; if pulse absent, add Maimendong and Wuweizi; if cold limbs, add Ganjiang; if extreme cold, add Fuzi; if accompanied by diarrhea, add Baizhu.
For mild wheezing after sweating, Guizhi Ji Houpo Xingren Tang (Cinnamon Twig Plus Magnolia Bud and Apricot Kernel Decoction) must be noted;
Guizhi Ji Houpo Xingren Tang: Treats mild wheezing after Taiyang disease sweating/purgation, indicating unresolved exterior. Use Guizhi Tang to dispel wind-pathogen, add Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) 1.5 qian and Xingren 1 qian to direct Qi downward.
Maxing Shigan Tang (Ephedra, Apricot Kernel, Gypsum, and Licorice Decoction): Mahuang 3 qian, Xingren 1.5 qian, Gancao 1 qian, Shigao 5 qian. Decoct in water and take warm. Treats sweating and wheezing without significant fever after sweating/purgation. Rationale: Sweating and wheezing with high fever indicates severe interior heat; without significant fever, exterior pathogen is severe. Use this decoction to disperse pathogen. Doubts may arise regarding using the same formula after sweating/purgation, but although methods differ, the pathogen location in the exterior is the same. After sweating, vomiting, or purgation, treatment principles are similar, as stated in the Classics.
For wheezing and rebellion after purgation, Gegen Qinlian Tang (Kudzu, Scutellaria, and Coptis Decoction) should be selected.
Gegen 3 qian, Huangqin, Huanglian each 2 qian, Gancao 1 qian, 3 slices of Shengjiang, 2 Jujubes. Decoct in water and take warm. Treats Taiyang Guizhi pattern, mistaken purgation leading to unceasing spontaneous diarrhea, rapid pulse, wheezing, and sweating. Rationale: Mistaken purgation makes intestines/stomach deficient and vulnerable to heat, leading to協热 (cooperating heat) spontaneous diarrhea. Rapid pulse indicates Yang excess and unresolved exterior. If pulse is faint, pathogen is in the interior. For spontaneous sweating and wheezing, it is caused by strong exterior pathogen; for sweating due to wheezing, it is caused by interior heat and rebellious Qi. Thus, the sweet property of Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) and Gancao disperses exterior pathogen; the bitter property of Huangqin and Huanglian clears interior heat.
For deficiency hiccups after sweating/purgation, Ganjiang Qinlian Renshen Tang (Dried Ginger, Scutellaria, Coptis, and Ginseng Decoction) and JuPi ZhuRu Tang (Tangerine Peel and Bamboo Shavings Decoction) are most effective;
Ganjiang Qinlian Renshen Tang: Ganjiang, Huangqin, Huanglian, Renshen each 3 qian. Decoct in water and take warm. Treats Cold Damage where food is vomited immediately upon ingestion, called Han Ge (Cold Obstruction). Also treats previous sweating/purgation, slow Guan pulse, Stomach deficiency-cold vomiting. Rationale: Sweet-acrid of Renshen and Ganjiang tonifies Zheng Qi; bitter of Huangqin and Huanglian opens cold obstruction internally. JuPi ZhuRu Tang: Renshen 3 qian, Chenpi 5 qian, Gancao 1 qian, Zhuru (Bambusa Caulis in Sterilization) one ball, 5 slices of Shengjiang. Decoct in water and take warm. Treats wind-cold-dampness in four seasons, nasal congestion, hoarse breathing, upward Qi failing to descend causing cough.

If pulse is full, add Dahuang to purge. Treats Women's Blood Wind syndrome, massive bleeding from metrorrhagia or anterior/posterior bleeding; Men's excessive blood loss leading to dryness, residual heat, grasping clothes, picking at empty air, closed eyes, unconsciousness, waving arms, throwing legs, confused speech, loss of spirit, floating-stringy-deficient pulse, extreme internal dryness-heat, coarse breathing, dry nose, upper/lower dryness—critical condition. For Qi-level dryness blockage, use Dachengqi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction); for Blood-level dryness blockage, use this decoction to descend Fire in Blood. Maohua Tang: Single handful of Maohua (Imperata Flower), or roots if no flowers. Wash, crush, decoct in water to concentrate juice and take. Adding Oujie is excellent. Treats unceasing epistaxis.

To rescue Fire Reversal, mania, fright, and body pain, use Chaihu Longgu Muli Qiandan Tang (Bupleurum, Dragon Bone, Oyster Shell, and Lead Tetroxide Decoction);
Jiuni Tang (Rescue Reversal Decoction): Guizhi, Shuqi (Patriniae Herba) each 3 qian, Gancao 2 qian, Muli (Ostreae Concha) 4 qian, Longgu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi) 2.5 qian, 5 slices of Shengjiang, 3 Jujubes, 2 zhan water. First decoct Shuqi for ten boils, then add other herbs, decoct to 0.8 zhan and take. Rationale: Sweating causing Yang loss leads to Heart deficiency, floating Spirit, fright, and mania. Give Guizhi Tang to resolve remaining exterior pathogen; Shaoyao benefits Yin, which is unsuitable for Yang loss, so remove it; Fire pathogen reversal, add Shuqi's acridity to disperse; Spirit/Qi escape, add astringency of Longgu and Muli to gather Spirit and secure Yang. Materia Medica states: Astringents remove escape.
Guizhi Gancao Longgu Muli Tang: Guizhi 1.5 qian, Gancao, Muli, Longgu each 1 qian. Decoct in water and take. Treats all Fire Reversal, mistaken purgation causing interior deficiency, plus moxibustion leading to irritability, mania, spermatorrhea, etc. Uses acrid-sweet of Guizhi and Gancao to disperse Fire pathogen in meridians; astringency of Longgu and Muli to gather floating Zheng Qi. Decoct to 1 zhan, add Dahuang 2 qian, boil two-three times, take warm. Rationale: Cold Damage after eight-nine days, pathogen about to transmit to Yang meridians. Mistaken purgation empties interior, heat persists, leading to chest fullness, irritability, fright, delirium, difficulty urinating—all due to Heart/Stomach heat and non-circulating fluids. Body heaviness/pain unable to turn is due to Yang Qi moving internally and not nourishing exterior. Use Xiaochaihu Tang to remove chest fullness; add Longgu, Muli, Qiandan to gather Spirit; Fuling to move fluids and promote urination; Dahuang to clear Stomach heat; Guizhi to move Yang Qi and resolve complex body heaviness/pathogen.

Treats Yang channel transmitting to Shaoyin, guest heat causing diarrhea, sore throat, chest fullness. Also when Yin-Yang pulses are both tight, indicating no sweat; if sweat occurs, it is Yang loss, law dictates sore throat, belonging to Shaoyin. Rationale: Pig is water animal, its Qi enters Kidney; thus Zhufu resolves Shaoyin guest heat. Add Baimi to moisten dryness and calm irritability; Baifen to benefit Qi and stop diarrhea. Single Gancao Tang: Gancao 1 liang, 1.5 zhan water, decoct to 1 zhan. Take three times daily. Treats Yang pathogen transmitting to Shaoyin, guest heat sore throat. If cold-heat struggle causes sore throat, add 5 qian Jiegeng, named Ganjie Tang. Rationale: Gancao sweet-neutral clears heat; Jiegeng acrid-warm disperses cold. Combined, they harmonize cold-heat and soothe Shaoyin Qi. Banxia Guizhi Tang: Banxia, Guizhi, Gancao each 2 qian, 5 slices of Shengjiang, 1.5 zhan water. Decoct to 0.7 fen, swallow slowly.
