Pulse Diagnosis
When Qi is deficient, the pulse is fine (thin), or slow and forceless, with a weak right-hand pulse; when Blood is deficient, the pulse is large, or rapid and forceless, with a weak left-hand pulse; when Yang is deficient, the pulse is slow; when Yin is deficient, the pulse is wiry; when True Qi is deficient, the pulse is tight. In men with chronic illness, a weak Cun Kou (Inch Pulse at the radial artery) indicates a fatal prognosis, while a strong pulse indicates survival; in women with chronic illness, a strong Ren Ying (Carotid pulse) indicates survival, while a weak pulse indicates a fatal prognosis.
Symptoms
"Deficiency" refers to deficiency damage. The five types of damaged pulses mentioned in the *Nan Jing* (Classic of Difficult Issues) are also caused by deficiency leading to damage. First degree damage affects the skin and hair, manifesting as contracted skin and falling hair; second degree damage affects the blood vessels, manifesting as deficient and scanty blood vessels that cannot nourish the Zang-Fu organs; third degree damage affects the muscles, manifesting as emaciated muscles where food intake fails to generate flesh; fourth degree damage affects the sinews, manifesting as flaccid sinews unable to maintain posture; fifth degree damage affects the bones, manifesting as bone atrophy and inability to rise from bed. Opposite to these are diseases progressing from below upwards. In conditions progressing downwards, bone atrophy and inability to rise from bed indicate a fatal prognosis; in conditions progressing upwards, contracted skin and falling hair indicate a fatal prognosis. How should damage be treated? Answer: For lung damage, tonify its Qi; for heart damage, harmonize Ying (Nutrient Qi) and Wei (Defensive Qi); for spleen damage, regulate diet and adapt to cold and warmth; for liver damage, soothe the middle Jiao; for kidney damage, tonify its Essence. This is the general principle for treating damage. Various deficiencies and extreme exhaustion syndromes invariably arise from weakness of the physical constitution, deficiency of the Heart and Kidney, and failure of Water and Fire to ascend and descend naturally. They may result from injury by Cold, Summer-heat, or overwork, or from excessive sexual activity, all of which can injure True Qi, leading to emaciation, weakness of the waist and knees, frequent urination, loose stools, dizziness, deafness, spermatorrhea, and spontaneous sweating. In severe cases, Deficient Fire attacks upward, causing facial redness and panting. These are all symptoms of various deficiencies. "Extreme exhaustion" refers to the injury of the Five Zang organs by the Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Overthinking, Sorrow, Fear, Fright). Excessive planning and thinking injure the Liver, corresponding to Sinew Exhaustion; mental exertion injures the Heart, corresponding to Vessel Exhaustion; excessive worry injures the Spleen, corresponding to Flesh Exhaustion; grief and sorrow injure the Lungs, corresponding to Qi Exhaustion; rigid adherence to moral principles injures the Kidneys, corresponding to Bone Exhaustion. These are the Five Exhaustions corresponding to the Five Damages. Extreme exhaustion depletes Essence and Qi, generating various syndromes.
Treatment Principles
Treatment should be adjusted according to the cold and heat patterns of the Five Zang and Six Fu organs. The Classics state: For those with insufficient form, warm them with Qi; for those with insufficient Essence, tonify them with Flavor. However, tonifying drugs must be mild and balanced; sudden use of harsh tonics or hot, dry cinnabar and stone minerals should be avoided, lest it deplete Kidney Water and exacerbate Deficient Fire. One must carefully weigh the severity of the condition before prescribing medication to achieve efficacy.

Boil the dregs again nine times as before, obtaining a total of seventy bowls of juice. Filter very cleanly. Use a medium clay pot, add seven bowls of juice, simmer slowly. Use menstrual blood from healthy virgin girls. The first flow is least preferred, the second is medium, fourth and fifth are lowest, but all can be used. Collection method: Make a vessel from black lead shaped like a yellow-robed crown. When menstruation begins, have an old woman place this vessel over the vulva, secure with silk cloth, collect the blood into a porcelain container. Repeat with the same vessel to collect about two to three cups. Let settle until red sediment sinks to the bottom like Cinnabar; this is the True Origin of Mother Qi. A yellow layer floats on top; this is "Fa Shui" (Emitting Water). Gently blot it away with cotton paper. Grind extremely fine, pure Bai Fu Ling (Poria) into powder. Float in warm water to remove woody debris, take the sinking part, dry, and mash into the Red Lead. Adjust consistency like dough. Form into thin pancakes, air-dry, avoid iron. Once dry, grind to fine powder. Take a large handful of Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), chop and decoct into a very thick paste. Strain through cotton cloth to remove dregs, mix with the powder, and form pills. Size of mung beans. Coat with finely ground Lao Keng Chen Sha (Old Pit Cinnabar). Store in silver pill jars, seal with yellow wax. Take fifty pills, or seventy to eighty. Sit quietly in a windless place after ingestion; slight sweating is a sign of efficacy. The medicinal properties circulate, filling the four limbs, meridians, skin, and hair. If fever and thirst occur after taking, it indicates Yuan Qi deficiency and arrival of medicinal power. Stop by drinking several cups of milk. Eat vegetarian food for three days after taking; avoid greasy foods. After two or three doses, or every three to five years, take two or three more doses. Strength and spirit will immediately revive. Hundreds of doses of herbal medicines cannot compare to one or two doses of this medicine. Since age sixteen, Essence and Qi gradually decline. Not only sexual desire causes damage, but any interaction consumes the source of Essence and Qi. Hence Zen monks face walls, and immortals sit in seclusion. This medicine is harvested from the human body, originating from the Primordial Beginning. Unlike metals, stones, or herbs which have biases, it truly restores the work of Creation. Gentleman cultivators should cherish it.
