Mr. Dai Wanqi, after suffering from wind-phlegm (Wind-Phlegm), was unable to extend and move his right hand. He was prescribed Niudan Nanting (Arisaema with Bovis Calculus), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), and Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix). After taking the medicine, his hand could move slightly, but he experienced left-sided headache, pain in the throat and tongue, and constipation with bowel movements only once every three days. Subsequently, Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Jiuhuangqin (Scutellariae Radix processed with wine), Manjingzi (Vittaginis Fructus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), and Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) were given, decocted in water and drunk. All symptoms subsided significantly. However, he felt fatigued in the afternoon and had slight pain on the right side of his head. Later, triggered by anger, his tongue trembled and he lost the ability to speak, and his headache returned severely. Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Shanzhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), and Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) were used for regulation, leading to recovery.
The wife of Scholar Liangqing suffered from headache, generalized body pain, distension in the anterior and posterior chest as well as both breasts, tightening and urgency of the vulva, a sensation of pressure in the anus, no bowel movement for three days, and dry mouth. The condition arose due to extreme dissatisfaction; in the afternoon, she had fever resembling malaria, nausea, and restlessness. As it was midsummer, this was attributed to Liver Qi stagnation caused by anger, combined with summerheat-pathogen. She was treated with 3 qian of Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), 1 qian each of Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), and Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), 0.8 fen each of Banxiaqu (Pinelliae Preparata) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), and 0.5 fen each of Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix). At night, Danggui Longhui Wan (Danggui Longhui Pill) was administered to purge, resulting in free urination and defecation, reduction of fever, and significant alleviation of all symptoms, except for slight nausea. Two doses of Qingspi Yin (Qingspi Decoction) were then given, leading to complete recovery.
The wife of Brother Zilin suffered from wind-pain (Bi Syndrome) in the right hand, frequent and urgent urination, urinary incontinence if rising too slowly, and edema in the feet. Over sixty years old, her pulse at the right Cun and Guan positions was soggy and weak, while the left hand pulse was harmonious. This is a syndrome of Spleen deficiency with dampness retention. Recently, she also had coughing. Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) was modified with Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Da Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), and Wancangsha (Bombyx Batryticatus), with doubled Yiyiren (Coicis Semen), treating her gradually until she recovered.
A woman had not menstruated for three months, suffered from diarrhea, abdominal distension and discomfort, regurgitation of sour fluid, occasional leukorrhea, and frequent nausea, believing herself to be pregnant. Upon palpating her pulse, I determined it was not pregnancy, but rather Damp-Heat in the Spleen Meridian and Blood Stasis in the Heart Meridian. Erchen Tang (Two Aged Decoction) was modified with Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Zhuling (Polyporus), Jiuhuanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma processed with wine), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus), Huashi (Talcum), Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus), and Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus). After diarrhea stopped and abdominal distension eased, menstruation began accompanied by lower back and abdominal pain. Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) 3 qian, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 5 qian, Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Taoren (Persicae Semen) 1 qian each were decocted in water and taken. Although menstruation flowed, a large amount of dark bloody fluid and pus-like material was vomited. Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) was then modified with Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Taoren (Persicae Semen), Honghua (Carthami Flos), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Huashi (Talcum). After two months of regulation, she fully recovered.
