The eyes are the gathering place of the essence of the five Zang organs. If wind pathogens and heat toxins invade the interior and interfere with the functions of the Zang organs, they will ascend along the meridians to attack the eyes, causing the red vessels (hyperemia of the conjunctival blood vessels) to penetrate the black pupil (cornea) like waves. The appearance of red vessels in different parts of the upper, lower, left, and right eyes corresponds to specific organ affiliations and must be carefully distinguished. If the red vessels start from the inner canthus (medial canthus), invade the cornea, and are accompanied by itching, this indicates heat in the Lung and Stomach meridians; if the red vessels begin at the outer canthus (lateral canthus), it is due to pathogenic heat affecting the Hand Shaoyin Heart meridian. Although the sources of pathology differ, treatment should be based on the location of the red vessels according to meridian theory.
The *Longmu Lun* states: "Outer obstruction of the eye with red vessels at the small canthus." When this eye disease first occurs, red vessels gradually emerge from the lateral canthus and spread onto the cornea. This is caused by heat accumulation in the Sanjiao (Triple Burner), which ascends to attack the Liver and Diaphragm, resulting in stagnation and heat. If treatment is delayed even slightly, vision may be damaged. It is appropriate to take Xijiao Yinzi (Rhinoceros Horn Decoction), followed by the application of Moyi Gao (Corneal Opacity Rubbing Ointment) for recovery.
The verse says: "The root of red vessels lies in the small canthus, gradually arising without a sense of rushing. Heat accumulation in the Sanjiao brings disaster; to treat it, one must first use the Tongxi Lengdong Yinzi (Washing Cold-Freezing Decoction). If the vessels are floating and large, hooking, cutting, and cauterization are necessary; frequent medication will dissolve them. Avoid salty, sour, cold, and hot matters in sexual activity, guarding strictly as if observing precepts."
Moding Mingmu Gao (from *Shengji Zonglu*), treating wind-heat attacking the eyes, red vessel proliferation, and pterygium.
Ingredients: Sheng Mayou (Raw Sesame Oil, 2 sheng), Zhensu (Butter/Sheeep Fat, 5 liang), Cheqianzi Ye (Plantago Leaf), Danzhuye (Lophatherum Leaf, washed and chopped), Yanhua (Salt Flowers, ground, each half liang), Wulan (Isatis Root), Daqing (Isatis Leaf), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Mayaxiao (Sodium Nitrate, ground separately), Puxiao (Mirabilite), Machixie Shi (Portulaca Fruit, ground, each 1 fen).
Preparation and Administration: Excluding nitrate salts, salt, oil, and butter, finely chop the remaining herbs, wrap them in cotton cloth, and place them in a glazed porcelain jar that has been oiled. Cover the mouth with cotton cloth and boil in water for three "Fu" periods (approximately 20+ days). Remove, wring out the dregs, filter the liquid through new cotton cloth, and store in an iron vessel. After meals and before bed, drip the oil onto the Baihui acupoint (top of the head) and rub the top of the head 3,000 times with an iron flatiron. This also helps remove heat toxins from the eyes, relieving dullness, distending pain, and dryness/astringency.
