Shao Yuzhu's daily routine and diet were normal. He could only lie on his side. As soon as he closed his eyes, he would startle awake. Even if he lay on his side again, he could not sleep throughout the night. It had been uncurable for many years. Meng Ying prescribed Sancai He Zhenzhong Dan (Three Talents Combined Heart-Pacifying Pill) with added Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), which yielded excellent results. ("Heart-Kidney Non-Interaction" is a vague term. In reality, it is Kidney Yin failing to ascend to nourish Heart Fire. Merely nourishing Kidney Yin is ineffective. Although Kidney Yin may be sufficient, without Kidney Yang to assist it, Kidney Yin cannot ascend to the Heart. The brilliance of Meng Ying's formula lies in adding Huanglian to drain Heart Fire and Rougui to stimulate Kidney Yin, thereby achieving efficacy. Ming Tian Dong (Asparagi Radix) sliced 6 qian, Da Shu Di (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) 8 qian, Jiu Jie Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) pounded and added later 1 qian, Jiao Yuan Zhi Rou (Polygalae Semen Preparatum) added later 1.5 qian, Xue Gui Ban (Testudinis et Chelonis Carapax et Plastrum) pounded and decocted first 3 liang, Long Gu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi et Scapulae) pounded and decocted first 1 liang, Dan Yan Shui Chao Chuan Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma fried with light salt water) 8 fen, Rou Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Cortex Medulla) 5 fen.)
Shao Yuzhu's grandson suffered from excessive phlegm for a long time. His chest and diaphragm felt full and stifling. He suffered from epilepsy year after year, to no avail of medication. Meng Ying palpated the pulse and said: "Qi deficiency predominates. Phlegm-fluids obstruct the rotation and transportation of Clear Yang. One should model the prescription after the Heaven's vigorous nature. Then the Great Qi will strengthen naturally, flowing endlessly, and the chest will become open and vast like the sky." He prescribed Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) minus Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), plus Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Sangzhi (Mori Ramulus), Xiebai (Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus), Louren (Trichosanthis Fructus), Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Jili (Tribuli Fructus), and Xuanfu (Inulae Flos). The fullness gradually relieved, and epilepsy ceased. (In this syndrome, Qi deficiency precedes, allowing phlegm-fluids to invade. Treating only phlegm worsens Qi deficiency. Thus, tonifying Qi treats the root, while resolving phlegm treats the branch. Sangzhi, Louren, and Bai Jili soften and soothe the Liver to treat the concomitant epilepsy. Lu Dangshen 5 qian, Chao Baizhu 3 qian, Bai Fuling 3 qian, Chao Huangqi 3 qian, Zhi Banxia 8 qian, Zhu Chenpi 1.5 qian, Jiang Zhi Chao Sangzhi 2 qian, Jiang Zhi Ban Louren 1 qian, Jiu Jie Pu powdered and added later 3 qian, Xi Xiebai crushed and added later 3 qian, Sheng Bai Jili de-thorned and added later 3 qian, Xuanfu Hua wrapped in silk 1 qian.)
Zhou HT's wife had postpartum lochia stasis. Some advised taking Shenghua Tang (Generate the Flow Decoction). Meng Ying diagnosed: "Yin deficiency with internal heat. The weather is hot and steaming. Even Chi Shatang (Red Rock Sugar) should not be taken." He prescribed Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Doujuan (Sojae Germen), Fengweizi (Leonuri Fructus), Fuling (Poria), Taoren (Persicae Semen), Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Zelan (Lycopersici Herba), and Hupo (Electri Succinum), which took effect immediately. He also stated: "Shenghua Tang is cold-natured and good. However, if there is Blood Heat or concurrent warm-heat pathogen, administering it indiscriminately causes sudden complications or gradual postpartum debility over time." (Yin deficiency with internal heat must be supported by specific pulse and symptom evidence, not just based on hot weather. Da Shengdi 8 qian, Danshen 3 qian, Danpi 2 qian, Da Dou Juan added later 1.5 qian, Bai Fuling steamed with human milk 3 qian, Sheng Taoren ground 3 qian, Fengweizi pounded and decocted first 4 qian, Jiao Zha Rou pounded 1.5 qian, Hei Zhi Pi 3 qian, Zelan Ye 1.5 qian, Hupo powdered and taken with water 8 fen.)
Elder Qiu, over sixty, suffered from Huoluan (Cholera-like disease) with muscle cramps in autumn. Meng Ying examined him and said: "This is Summerheat." He administered his self-made Can Shi Tang (Vermicompost Decoction); two doses brought peace. Three days later, she suddenly became weak, unable to turn over, spoke little, drank nothing, and ate nothing. Meng Ying palpated the pulse and said: "In an elderly constitution, Yuan Qi (Original Qi) leaks with diarrhea; supplementation is necessary. However, residual summerheat is not cleared, so hot medicines are contraindicated." He prescribed Gaoshen (Korean Ginseng), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Yuzhu (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Bidou (Coicis Semen), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Yiren (Coicis Semen), Fuling (Poria), and Jili (Tribuli Fructus). After six doses, she could speak and move, gradually resumed eating, and recovered after a month of regulation. (Can Shi Tang is seen in other cases. Yuan Qi leaking with diarrhea is due to delayed treatment of Huoluan. Gao Li Shen sliced 3 qian, Zheng Maidong 3 qian, Jiu Chao Zhimu 2 qian, Fei Yuzhu 3 qian, Chen Mugua 3 qian, Sheng Bidou pounded 3 qian, Xian Shihu pounded and decocted first 4 qian, Sheng Yiren pounded 4 qian, Bai Fuling 3 qian, Sheng Bai Jili de-thorned 3 qian.)
Zhou HT suffered severe Huoluan with muscle cramps on a July night. In haste, he mistakenly ingested about one qian of Qinglin Wan (Green Unicorn Pill). Meng Ying examined him at dawn: pulse was faint as if absent, ears deaf, eyes sunken, sweating, cold limbs, hoarse voice, emaciated muscles. Suspecting delay in medication, he first prepared a strong decoction of Gao Li Shen (Korean Ginseng) to urgently replenish the Qi. Subsequently, he prescribed a formula with Renshen (Ginseng), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Fuling (Poria), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Yiren (Coicis Semen), Bidou (Coicis Semen), and Lianshi (Nelumbinis Semen). One dose reduced all symptoms. (Yang deficiency is identified by the faint/absent pulse, hoarseness, and emaciation. First, decoct one liang of Gao Li Shen strongly, taken in divided doses to reconnect the faint Yang. Formula: Gao Li Shen 5 qian, Chao Baizhu 3 qian, Jiu Chao Jiao Baishao 1.5 qian, Bai Fuling dry-cut 3 qian, Chao Shu Fupian 5 qian, Rou Gui Xin 2 qian, Chao Ganjiang 3 qian, Chen Mugua 3 qian, Chao Yiren 3 qian, Chao Bai Bidou 3 qian, Chao Lianrou (heart removed, skin kept) 3 qian. Heavy use of Fuzi, Rougui, and Ganjiang is needed to stimulate the tonic herbs.) Next day, Meng Ying said: "Qi deficiency predominates. How can one endure the depletion from vomiting and diarrhea? Mistakenly ingesting bitter-cold herbs nearly extinguished the faint Yang. Yesterday, I combined Zhenwu Tang (True Warrior Decoction) and Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) to restore Spleen and Kidney Yang. The harsh/potent herbs can now be withdrawn. Severe vomiting/diarrhea injures fluids; when tendons lose nourishment, cramping occurs. Xue Shengbai compared this to Jing illness (spasm). In treating cramping, protecting fluids is paramount. If Yang returns but harsh/cold herbs are continued, fluids cannot recover, stirring internal wind. Using Fuzi and Rougui for Cold Huoluan requires balance; do not act recklessly and undo previous efforts." He removed Ganjiang, Fuzi, and Rougui from the previous formula, added Huangqi (Astragali Radix) and Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), and cured him in ten days. (Previous formula added Sheng Huangqi 5 qian, Cha Shihu pounded and decocted first 5 qian.)
Chen Yipu's wife suffered Huoluan with cramps in mid-autumn. She self-diagnosed as Cold and took hot medicines, worsening the condition. Zhu Maocai was consulted, agreed with Chen, used the same medicine, and the illness intensified. Meng Ying diagnosed: "Cold is the new external constraint; Heat is the internal true disease. Bitter mouth and thirst mean Jiang (Ginger) and Fu (Aconite) are contraindicated. You should follow Liu Hejian's method." They did not believe him, continued hot medicines, and died from bleeding from mouth and nose. (Huoluan divides into Cold and Heat categories. Successive hot medicines worsened the disease. Bitter mouth indicates Heat pathogen; thirst indicates Yin fluid injury. This confirms Hot Huoluan. Formula should have Jiu Chao Zhimu 3 qian, Jiu Chao Chuan Lian 8 fen, Xian Lianzi 4 qian, Huo Shu Lugeng 2 liang, Xian Piye wrapped 3 qian, Sheng Yiren pounded 8 qian, Xian Hegan 2 chi, Chen Mugua 3 qian, Sheng Bai Jili de-thorned 1.5 qian, Dan Wu Zhu added later 4 fen, Cha Shihu pounded and decocted first 1 liang.)
Gu Yuntuo was obese and elderly. He contracted Malaria in autumn. Pulse was Kou (Hollow) with occasional pauses. Meng Ying said: "Kou indicates Summerheat. Pauses indicate Phlegm-Damp obstructing Qi mechanism flow. Warm-tonics are strictly forbidden as they aid the pathogen." He prescribed clearing and resolving phlegm methods, but the illness did not subside, and blood appeared in stool. Meng Ying said: "Summerheat-damp is formless Qi. Normally phlegmatic people allow pathogens to lodge, resembling a tangible disease. Clearing methods cannot prevail; Qi and Blood are disturbed. We must attack and remove the phlegm so the pathogen has no foundation, and the illness will leave. Do not fear drastic drugs due to old age." He prescribed Tao Ren Cheng Qi Tang (Peach Kernel Drains the Irritable Decoction) plus Xiyangshen (American Ginseng), Huashi (Talcum), Qinlian (Scutellariae et Coptidis Rhizoma), Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum), Beimu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus), and Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), sending down Mengshi Gun Tan Wan (Calamine Rolling Phlegm Pill). Two doses passed much sticky phlegm and foul blood; malaria stopped. He followed up with moistening/clearing methods until recovery. (Diagnosis and prescription rely on pulse/symptoms. Elderly and obese implies sufficient Yang. Stool blood distinguishes fatigue: fatigued is Yang deficiency, non-fatigued is Yang excess. The phrase 'occasional pause' is key. Phlegm obstruction causes pauses; removing phlegm removes pauses and the 'Kou' quality. It is not a simple Kou pulse. Misapplication of Tao Ren Cheng Qi Tang logic. Sheng Mangxiao 3 qian, soaked in boiling water, strained. Sheng Taoren ground 3 qian. Xiyangshen 3 qian. Xi Huashi 4 qian. Jiang Chao Ku Qin 1 qian. Jiang Chao Chuan Lian 6 fen. Lai Juhong 1 qian. Chuan Beimu pounded 3 qian. Cha Shihu pounded and decocted first 5 qian. Medicine sent with Mengshi Gun Tan Wan 3 qian.)
Shao Zishou's wife suffered hematemesis. Skin was dry and rough, thirsty, pulse empty-large. Meng Ying said: "Qi aspect Yin deficiency. Warm-tonics are wrong; heavy filling/nourishing is also wrong." He prescribed Renshen (Ginseng), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Er Dong (Ophiopogonis et Asparagi Tubers), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Baihe (Lilii Bulbus), Yuzhu (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), Sangye (Mori Folium), and Piye (Loquuti Folium), resulting in cure. (Hematemesis divides into Deficiency and Excess. This is Deficiency. Differentiating Qi aspect Yin deficiency relies on dry skin, thirst, and empty-large pulse. Warm-tonics oppose the condition. 'Filling' usually targets Lung Yin; mistakenly targeting Kidney Yin is error. Zhang Chunqiao contracted Malaria in September. Less chills, more fever, occurring every other day. After only two attacks, he became thin. Meng Ying diagnosed: "Pulse string-taut and fine, very rapid at Cun/Guan/Chi (specifically Chi). Onset at midnight, dry mouth, craving drink. This is Foot Shaoyin Heat Malaria. Rapid wasting after two attacks cannot be ignored." Formula: Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Tiandong (Asparagi Radix), Guiban (Testudinis et Chelonis Carapax et Plastrum), Fuling (Poria), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), Sangye (Mori Folium). (Differentiating Kidney Meridian Heat Malaria relies on midnight onset, thirst, and especially rapid Chi pulse. Palpation must not be careless. Jin Kuanfu caught a pathogen in early winter. Physician Huang prescribed Ginger/Cinnamon formulas. Gradually, feet became cold, face red, delirious, and irritable. Suspected Daiyang (Floating Yang), they were helpless. Meng Ying diagnosed: "Latent pathogen manifesting late. Mistaken ascending/lifting herbs caused Heat to float upward. Clearing/resolving will calm it." Drinking it brought immediate relief. (Heat syndrome: if Qi does not descend, feet are cold. Clearing Heat allows Qi to descend, warming feet. Red face, delirium, irritability indicate Heat in Qi aspect. Zhou Pinfang suffered Winter-Warmth. Gu Tingquan knew the constitution was Yin deficient, not Wind-Cold, and avoided warming/lifting herbs, but symptoms persisted. Meng Ying added Beimu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Ziwan (Asternis Radix), and Dongguazi (Benincasae Semen) to the formula, achieving effect. Meng Ying often said serious illnesses have gentle treatment methods, visible here. (Tingquan's original formula likely only cleared/resolved, lacking phlegm-resolving and acrid-opening herbs.)
Shao Qiuzi's mother, near sixty, suffered alternating chills and fever like Malaria in spring. Various physicians failed. Meng Ying diagnosed: "Damp pathogen stagnated long, transformed into Heat. Mistaken ascending/tonic herbs stirred Liver Yang; Phlegm-fluids reversed upward." He prescribed descending methods; chills/fever reduced. The family mistakenly gave Shouwu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix) and Biejia (Trionycis Carapax), leading to hidden pulse, chest stuffiness, hiccuping, spontaneous sweating, thirst without desire to eat, malarial flush, and diarrhea. Meng Ying re-diagnosed: "Greasy/cloying herbs blocked Qi mechanism; Clear Yang fails to rotate; Phlegm-fluids obstruct collaterals. Not collapse. Tonics are contraindicated." He prescribed Gualou Xiebai Banxia Tang (Trichosanthes-Raktus-Mixed Decoction) combined with Xiao Xianxiong Tang (Minor Chest-Hammer Decoction) plus Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniis), Xuanfu (Inulae Flos), Beimu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Ziwan (Asternis Radix), and Piye (Loquuti Folium). Hiccups stopped, pulse emerged, significant turnaround. (Hidden pulse/chest stuffiness indicate Excess-Heat floating. Disease in Qi aspect. Family again mistakenly gave frequent Ginger/Cinnamon. Lips swelled, throat painful, unable to drink, tongue dry/short/hard, difficult speech. Meng Ying rescued with Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn-Rehmannia Decoction) plus Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Yinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Zhuhuang (Bambusae Spira), Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Danning (Arisaematis Cum Bile), Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), and Zhuli (Bambusae Sucus). Six-seven doses expelled extremely foul gelatinous phlegm; porridge/drink intake gradually resumed. (Lip swelling/throat pain indicate Warm-Dryness severely injuring Qi aspect Yin. Last year, Autumn was dry, Winter warm, no frost/snow. Rivers/wells dried. In September, Smallpox epidemic spread; five out of ten died. Children dying by hundreds daily. Meng Ying said: "This is Vaccine-Epidemic. Treatment differs from regular Smallpox. Heaven's command releases rather than stores. Spring may bring many throat ailments." He published Jiawei Sandou Yin (Modified Three Beans Decoction): Sheng Lv Dou (Mung Bean), Sheng Hei Da Dou (Black Soybean) [or Sheng Bai Bidou], Sheng Huang Dou (Yellow Soybean), Sheng Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix), Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos). Those unvaccinated take it preventively; those showing signs drink freely hoping for mildness. He also advised frequent Qinglong Baihu Tang (Green Dragon White Tiger Decoction). (Note: Green fruit clears Liver Fire/Wind; Radish transforms Lung Dryness-Heat. Together resolve phlegm/toxicity. Replacing tea keeps organs harmonious, preventing throat disease.) To prevent next Spring throat issues. Next Spring, no rain, indeed many throat cases. Meng Ying used Zhang Zhongjing's Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) as primary fire-extinguisher. When Heat transmitted to Ying (Nutrient) level, he used Jin San's Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn-Rehmannia Decoction) modified as appropriate. He distributed Qinglong Baihu Tang and Xilei San (Xilei Powder) widely, saving many. Xilei San ingredients: Xiangya Xie (Ivory Shavings, roasted), Zhenzhu (Pearl, each 2 fen), Fei Qingdai (Azuritum, 6 fen), Tou Mei Bing (Camphora, 3厘), Biqian (Spider Web/Nests, 20 - avoid wooden board ones), Xi Niuhuang (Buffalo Calculus), Ren Zhijia (Human Nail, each 5 fen - male case uses female nail, vice versa). Grind extremely fine, insufflate onto lesion. Discharge of foul saliva indicates cure.
Duan Chunmu's wife had Rotting Throat. Internal/External medicine doctors were helpless. Meng Ying saw her: emaciated, body hot as iron, tough phlegm blocked throat unable to expectorate, requiring paper wiping to pull out. Lesion red/swollen/white-rotten, gums/tongue ulcerated, unable to eat/drink, menstruation arrived prematurely. Left pulse fine-rapid, Right pulse string-taut-slippery. He said: "Yin deficient constitution, latent Fire disease. Failed clearing/descending, disturbing Ying level." First, Xijiao Dihuang Tang to clear Ying level and regulate erratic blood. (Yin deficiency/four sentences confirm etiology. Left fine-rapid = Yin deficiency/Ying Heat. Right string-taut-slippery = Qi Heat/Phlegm Excess. Treat Blood then Qi; urgent symptom management. Wu Yufeng's two grandsons vaccinated. Fever/throat pain 2-3 days post-vaccination. Doctor mistook for impending eruption, used ascending/transmitting herbs. Red spots like brocade, throat rotting like burning. Meng Ying ordered Qinglong Baihu Tang as tea, drinking freely; they remained safe.
Pan Hongchou's grandson vaccinated. Throat pain 3 days post-vaccination. Doctor used ascending/scattering herbs. Fever/spots/rot. Died in seven days. Pan Xiangyan contracted Smallpox (common name). Throat rotting to tongue, chest/stomach blocked, jaw locked, dysuria, mouth flowing purple-black blood clots. Meng Ying said: "Evil blood/toxic saliva wants to exit." Insufflated Xilei San, held bowl under mouth. Much saliva/blood flowed out; throat/jaw/chest relaxed. Prescribed Xijiao Dihuang Tang plus Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Yinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Tongni (Child's Urine), Ouji (Lotus Root Juice), Zhuhuang (Bambusae Spira), Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Beimu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus), Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma). Gradually stabilized. Followed by fluid-generating/filling herbs to cure. (Throat rotting to tongue... Heat blazing/Yin injured. Condition in Upper Jiao Qi aspect. Da Shengdi 8 qian. Tu Zhiwu's son suffered Phlegm-Cough for years. Recently aggravated by grief. Mistakenly given Renshen/Baizhu, illness worsened. Meng Ying diagnosed: "Yin deficiency Labor Cough. Long cough leads to Chong Qi failing to grasp, causing vomiting. Not Stomach Cold." The Classic says "Labor requires warming," meaning warming/nourishing, not warm-tonifying. Formula: Xiyangshen (American Ginseng), Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Congrong (Cynomorii Herba), Er Dong (Ophiopogonis et Asparagi Tubers), Fuling (Poria), Guiban (Testudinis et Chelonis Carapax et Plastrum), Muli (Concha Ostreae), Zhi Shiyin (Psyllitum), Yuzhu (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma), Piye (Loquuti Folium), Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium). Took it and calmed. (Giving Renshen/Baizhu worsened illness; clearly not Yang deficiency. Meng Ying diagnosing Yin deficiency implies pulse evidence. Chong Meridian relates to Liver; Liver disease causes Chong rebellion. "Labor requires warming" means Yin-deficient people also lack Yin-within-Yang Yang. Cannot use purely cold herbs; must mix warm herbs in cold ones. For Chong Qi failing to grasp, use anchoring/heavy-settling herbs. Xiyangshen 3 qian. Chao Shudi 8 qian. Ming Tian Dong sliced 6 qian. Hu Qiuren felt slightly unwell in intense heat. Doctor used Chai Ge Xiangru San (Bupleurum-Kudzu-Elatostema Powder) to scatter. Instead, chills/chest stuffiness resulted. Another doctor used Zhipo Binglang (Arecae Seed) to purge. Condition worsened daily. Meng Ying saw: spontaneous sweating, limbs/back extremely cold, barely breathing, pulse faint/no spirit. Said: "Congenital deficiency, Yang Qi about to collapse. Must be mistaken exterior syndrome." Prescribed Jiuni Tang (Rescue the Counterflow Decoction) plus Renshen/Huangqi. Gradually calmed. Followed by Qi-tonifying/fluid-generating, regulated for a month to cure. (Chills/chest stuffiness = Yang deficiency. Cold limbs/back, faint pulse, barely breathing, spontaneous sweating = Yang Qi about to collapse. Formula: Chao Lu Dangshen 5 qian. Chao Xi...)
