Didang Tang (Echidna Decoction): Treats severe cold damage progressing deeply, where exterior symptoms remain intense, heat accumulates in the lower jiao, pulse is faint and sinking, no chest binding occurs, and madness develops. If the lower abdomen is distended and hard, with normal urination, it indicates blood stasis; if urination is obstructed, there is no blood stasis. Alternatively, if yangming heat accumulation is severe internally, causing forgetfulness or madness, and although stool is hard, it passes easily with a black color, this indicates blood accumulation. In the absence of typical exterior or interior syndromes, but with fever deepening daily, even if the pulse floats, purgation may be used. Or after prior purgation, if the pulse is rapid, stomach heat causes excessive hunger, and constipation persists for several days, this indicates blood stasis.
Tao Ren (Seven) Dahuang (One fen) Shuizhi (Stir-fried) Mengchong (Wings and feet removed, stir-fried, ten each.)
Crush ingredients to the size of hemp seeds, divide into two doses. Boil one cup of water until half remains, strain, and take warm. If unrelieved, administer again.
Didang Wan (Echidna Pill): Treats cold damage with fever, fullness in the lower abdomen, and difficulty urinating, indicating blood stasis requiring purgation; do not use other medicines.
Tao Ren (Eight) Dahuang (One fen) Shuizhi (Stir-fried) Mengchong (Wings and feet removed, stir-fried, seven each.)
Grind to powder, mix with honey to form two pills. Boil one pill in one cup of water until six parts remain, take warm. If blood stasis has not passed, administer again.
Da Chengqi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction): Treats simultaneous exterior and interior heat with more severe disease progression. Yangming pulse is slow, sweating occurs, aversion to cold is absent, body feels heavy, and hallucinations occur. Severe cases involve loss of recognition, grasping at clothing and bedrails, fearfulness, slight panting, and fixed gaze, indicating extreme interior heat in yangming. Or after emesis/purgation, constipation persists for five to ten days, tidal fever occurs at dusk, heart and stomach feel dry and hot with inner restlessness, resembling malaria, with a deep, solid pulse. Or with difficulty urinating, alternating difficulty and ease of defecation, panting, dizziness, inability to lie down. Or abdominal distension, fullness, solid pain, irritability, thirst, delirium, with a solid, rapid, deep pulse. Extreme interior heat and dryness, gastrointestinal stagnation, retained fluids not dispersing, high swelling of chest and abdomen, unbearable pain, vomiting only cold fluid, extreme thirst yet inability to drink, forced drinking fails to quench thirst, panting, and oppression.
Dahuang (Half liang) Mangxiao (Half liang) Houpo (Half liang, bark removed) Zhishi (Half liang)
Crush to hemp seed size, use half portion. Add one and a half cups of water and three slices of fresh ginger, decoct to six parts. Add Mangxiao, boil briefly, strain, and take warm.
Xiao Chengqi Tang (Minor Order the Qi Decoction): Treats deepening cold damage where dry fecal matter is suspected. Abdominal borborygmus indicates readiness for attack. Without borborygmus, stool is likely hard initially then loose; do not purge, as it causes abdominal fullness and anorexia. Drinking water may cause hiccups, followed by fever and re-hardening of stool. If abdominal fullness and obstruction are significant, or yangming sweating depletes fluids leading to dry intestinal heat and hard stool with delirium, pulse slippery, mild vexation after emesis/purgation, frequent urination, constipation, or diarrhea with delirium: from onset for two to three days, weak pulse, without taiyang or shaoyang signs, mental distress, epigastric binding. By day four or five, even if eating is possible, give small amounts of Chengqi Tang to harmonize and provide relief.
Dahuang (Half liang) Houpo (Three qian, bark removed) Zhishi (Three qian)
Crush to hemp seed size, divide into two doses. Add one cup of water and three slices of fresh ginger, decoct to half cup, strain juice, and take warm. If no bowel movement, administer again.
Tiaowei Chengqi Tang (Regulate Stomach Order the Qi Decoction): Treats cases after sweating/harmonizing where there is no aversion to cold, only steaming fever. Or deepening disease with epigastric nausea, chest pain, loose stool, abdominal fullness, mild depression/vexation, following prior emesis/purgation. Or deepening disease with interior heat and delirium requiring purgation, but mistakenly treated with toxic hot pills (silver powder, croton), damaging true yin and worsening pathogenic heat, leading to persistent heat-collateral diarrhea. Or early purgation when both exterior and interior are hot, entering deficiency, failing to form chest binding but causing persistent heat diarrhea, epigastric fullness/hardness/pain, irritability, thirst, dry throat, slippery-rapid-solid pulse, various abdominal fullness/solid pain cases. Irritability, thirst, delirium, red urine, hard stool, slippery-solid-tight pulse.
Dahuang Mangxiao Gancao (Equal parts)
Crush to hemp seed size, use half portion. Add one large cup of water, decoct to half cup, strain, add Mangxiao, boil. If no relief, decoct and take again.
Sanyi Chengqi Tang (Three-One Order the Qi Decoction): Treats cold damage and miscellaneous diseases, internal/external injuries, varying durations, abdominal fullness, dry throat, irritability, thirst, delirium, epigastric hardness/pain upon pressure, red/astringent urine, constipation. Or severe internal damp-heat causing slippery diarrhea, severe heat with panting/cough/oppression/confusion, palpitations, madness/seizures, eye pain, mouth ulcers, tongue swelling, throat obstruction, abscesses, yangming stomach heat causing macules, deep pulse suitable for purgation. Pediatric extreme heat, wind-induced convulsions, chronic asthma/coma, black sunken macules, urinary obstruction, fatal abdominal fullness. Or persistent heat post-macules, failure to scab, or formation of macular patterns. Chronic sores/eczema, internal heat forming rashes/stagnant masses, yellow/thin painful conditions. Sudden new/old heart pain, wind-phlegm/wine obstruction, intestinal mucus/stagnation. Long-standing wind-heat, acute wine/food injury, mental distress/oppression, rapid-deep-solid pulse. Or kidney water/yin deficiency with solitary excess yang heat, sudden collapse/stroke. Sudden aphonia (loss of voice), severe internal heat accumulation, deep yang reversal with faint/nearly imperceptible pulse. Or harmony of exterior, with righteous qi and pathogenic heat merging in interior, causing extreme interior heat, extreme yang resembling yin, chills, faint/imperceptible pulse. Or severe wind-heat/dryness in lower jiao causing urinary/fecal obstruction. Or retained dead fetus in postpartum, or simultaneous exterior-interior heat requiring purgation.
Dahuang (Half liang, brocade pattern) Mangxiao (Half liang) Houpo (Half liang, bark removed) Zhishi (Half liang) Gancao (One liang)
Crush to hemp seed size. Add one and a half cups of water and three slices of fresh ginger, decoct to seven parts. Add Mangxiao, boil twice, strain, and take warm.
Shizao Tang (Ten Jujube Decoction): Treats taiyang wind-strike with diarrhea, retching, shortness of breath, no aversion to cold, sweating, periodic attacks, headache, epigastric hardness/pain radiating to hypochondrium. Also treats edema/abdominal distension, wine/food stagnation, intestinal mucus/stagnation, stagnant masses, acute heat pain, chronic malaria. Or righteous qi/pathogenic heat merging in interior, extreme heat resembling yin with chills. Exterior qi entering interior, deep yang reversal with faint/imperceptible pulse. Severe wind-heat/dryness in lower jiao causing urinary/fecal obstruction, solid heat lumbar pain. Pediatric heat binding, breast masses, accumulated heat attacks, wind-convulsions, macule/rash heat toxins unable to resolve.
Daji Yuanhua (Slow fire stir-fry until color changes. Zhang Zhongjing/local dialect differs. 'Ao' means dry frying.) Gansui (Equal parts)
Grind to powder. Add one large cup of water and ten jujubes (cut open), decoct to half cup juice. Mix with half a coin-sized scoop. For robust individuals, one qian per dose.
Yinchen Tang (Artemisia Decoction): Treats extreme yangming interior heat, irritability, thirst, heat stagnation, retained fluids not dispersing, leading to damp-heat interaction and jaundice. Only head sweats, body does not, difficulty urinating, craving fluids, body turns yellow. Best taken with Wuling San mixed in. Promotes urination and defecation.
Yinchen (One liang, stems removed) Dahuang (Half liang) Dazhizi (Seven large, dark, solid ones; ten if smaller)
Crush to hemp seed size. Add two and a half cups of water, slow fire decoct to one cup, strain juice, take warm. Stop when bowels move. Severe cases repeat. Expect passage of rotting fish-like material, pus/blood, or golden urine like soap pod juice. If jaundice is impending, divide one dose into four servings, mix with three qian of Wuling San. No method surpasses this for treating jaundice. Excellent.
Guiling Ganlu San (Cinnamon Poria Sweet Dew Powder, also known as Guiling Baizhu San. One formula uses one and a half liang of Gancao.): Treats cold damage, summerheat, stomach wind, dietary injuries, and all internal/external pathogenic transmissions. Severe internal damp-heat, headache, dry mouth, vomiting/diarrhea, irritability/thirst, red/astringent urine, urgent bowel pain, damp-heat cholera vomiting/diarrhea, abdominal fullness/pain/oppression, pediatric vomiting/diarrhea/wind-convulsions.
Fuling (One liang, peeled) Gancao (Two liang, honey-fried) Baizhu (Half liang) Zexie (One liang) Guizhi (Half liang, bark removed) Shigao (Two liang) Hanshuishi (Two liang) Huashi (Four liang) Zhuling (Half liang)
Grind to powder. Take three qian per dose, mixed with warm water or fresh water; ginger tea is best. Pediatrics: one qian per dose, same method. This medicine combined with Shenjin Wan stops diarrhea effectively and resolves internal/external pathogenic injuries and damp-heat.
Alternative: Omit Zhuling, take three times daily regardless of timing.
Zhizi Bopi Tang (Gardenia and Phellodendron Bark Decoction): Treats slight head sweating, free urination, and mild yellowing. Suitable for mild damp-heat interaction.
Huangbai (Half liang) Gancao (One fen) Dazhizi (Fifteen)
Crush to hemp seed size. Add three cups of water, decoct to one cup, strain juice, divide into doses throughout the day.
Zhichi Chi Tang (Gardenia and Fermented Soybean Decoction): Treats inner restlessness/vexation, insomnia due to cold damage, dry heat stagnation blocking qi flow, chest fullness, headache, slight sweating, deficiency vexation.
Dazhizi (Seven, crushed) Douchi (Half he, commonly salted fermented soybeans)
Crush to hemp seed size. First decoct Zhizi in two cups of water to one and a half cups. Add Douchi, decoct to half cup, strain juice, take warm. For deficient qi, add one fen of Gancao. For vomiting (mistakenly purged with pills), add half liang of Shengjiang, or soak hands/feet in warm water to circulate chest heat. All additions require pre-boiling Zhizi. If vomiting occurs, stop subsequent doses.
Note: Zhichi Chi Tang is not primarily an emetic. Due to severe dry heat stagnation, immediate strong action may cause fever/vomiting. Vomiting opens stagnation, allowing qi circulation and fluid distribution; thus, re-administration is unnecessary.
Daxiexiong Tang (Major Trap the Chest Decoction): Treats post-sweat/purge cases with five-six days of constipation, dry tongue/thirst, dusk tidal fever, abdominal pain/fullness from heart to lower abdomen intolerable to touch, pulse should be deep-tight-slippery-rapid. Or only chest binding without significant heat, slight head sweating, deep-slippery pulse indicates water binding.
Dahuang (Three qian) Mangxiao (Three qian) Gansui Powder (Three zi)
Crush to hemp seed size, divide into two doses. Per dose, decoct Dahuang in one cup water to six parts. Add Mangxiao, boil once or twice, strain juice, mix with half a zi scoop of Gansui powder, take warm. If not sufficiently purged, repeat. If condition worsens and purging fails, adjust dosage according to judgment.
Xiaoxiexiong Tang (Minor Trap the Chest Decoction): Treats minor chest binding, epigastric pain on pressure, floating-slippery pulse, no significant heat, exterior unresolved. Do not purge, or death ensues. Suitable for minor chest binding.
Banxia (Four qian, washed in boiling water, whole, not crushed) Shengjiang (Two qian, sliced) Huanglian (Two qian, crushed) Gualou Shi (Large one, half liang, crush shell only, do not crush seed; crushing seed is incorrect)
Add three cups of water, decoct Gualou juice to one and a half cups. Add herbs, decoct to one cup, strain juice, divide into two warm doses. Continue until effective.
Daxiexiong Wan (Major Trap the Chest Pill): Treats fever where premature purging allows heat entry causing chest binding, stiff neck resembling rou-jing (soft spasm). Purging brings harmony.
Dahuang (Half liang) Mangxiao (One fen) Xingren (Twelve, skin/apical buds removed, double-kernel avoided, stir-fried in ash until color change) Tingli (Three qian, lightly stir-fried)
Grind Dahuang to powder, add Tingli, pound, sieve. Grind Xingren and Mangxiao into paste. Form pills the size of弹子 (bullet). Take one pill per dose with three zi of Gansui powder, half spoon of white honey, one cup water, decoct to half cup, take warm. Bowel movement expected after overnight. If no movement, repeat.
