,深可诫也。将养之法,须寒温得所,先热而脱,先寒而着。若背伤冷,即令咳嗽;若手足伤热,即令心烦;

Moxibustion Method (Regarding whether moxibustion is applicable, Zhang Wenzhong states, see the general description of symptoms.) From ancient times to now, those cured of this disease are less than one in ten. So-called Ligu (Cat Bone), Tagan (Otter Liver), Tianlinggai (Human Skull), Tongjingbi (Bronze Mirror Nose) are merely theories, never effective. Only Gaohuangshu (BL43) and Cui Shi's points, if moxibusted early upon hearing of the disease, have nearly a 50% cure rate. Late application is useless. (From *San Yin Fang*)
(Note: Cui Shi's points refer to Sihua and Hunmen points. *Su Shen Liangfang* details them extensively, text is too long, not recorded here. Also Cui Shi said: I formerly served as Sima of Luozhou, often cured thirteen people in thirty days via moxibustion, over two hundred in total. As for Cat Head and Otter Liver, only old tales heard; Gold Tooth and Copper Nose rarely show ability. Not comparable to this method for saving lives in crisis. This is based on Chen's work. Hunmen point was not previously recorded; its name first appeared in Ming Dynasty Xu Feng's *Zhenjiu Daquan*.)
Regulation Method: *Su You Lun* says: For those suffering from Gu Zheng, sitting, lying, and dwelling places should not be too cold, nor too hot. Too cold makes medicinal energy difficult to circulate, causing bloating and indigestion, or rebellious Qi rising. Too hot causes blood vessel congestion, dizziness, eye pain, dry lips and mouth, chest vexation, thirst for water. These are all signs of excessive care/neglect, deeply to be warned against. Care method: Must balance cold and heat. Remove clothes if feeling hot first; put on clothes if feeling cold first. If back suffers cold, cough results; if hands and feet suffer heat, heart vexation results; if covering clothes too thick, night sweats during sleep result; if covering clothes too thin, chest/abdominal fullness results. Food and drink timing is not limited. Better to eat less (to preserve against residual pathogens), eat frequently (to assist medicinal power). Must be soft (easy to digest), not hard (to avoid damaging Stomach Qi causing indigestion). All these should be judged by intent. (From *Waitai Mi Yao*)
Another discussion: Gu Zheng disease, regardless of gender, strictly forbids sexual activity. Movement and labor are especially unsuitable. Old, smelly, sour, salty foods, sticky indigestible foods, beef, horse, donkey, sheep, soybeans, pork, fish, greasy foods, wine, wheat, fruits, wild boar, purslane, bamboo shoots, garlic, bracken, and cold/raw foods, must not be consumed. Unless after one month of recovery, can gradually open restrictions. Generally thus, extend by analogy. This disease suits cooked rice, salted fermented beans, bean paste, roasted ginger, scallions, leeks, goji berries, alfalfa, bitter vegetables, Rehmannia, Achyranthes leaves. All must be boiled soft before eating. When disease recedes, fearing skin/muscle weakness, can occasionally eat dried venison jerky. (Same source)
Patients must cherish life, strengthen will, abstain from sex, cease delusions, avoid anger, regulate diet, to cultivate their own root. Otherwise, even taking good medicine is useless. (From *Mingyi Zazhu*)
